How do I submit links/images as something other than a self-post?

I realize I'm probably being a dolt and missing something...but it's frustrating that even though I enter the URL it processes as a self-post, leading to comments about "helps if you give the link!" being necessary to alert me that there's a problem.

That and for image posts it would be nice to have a thumbnail.
