Operation Reddipendence: advocating and enabling for full reddit independence
Redditors. For now we all rejoice in a time of peace, prosperity and stability. All of us, together, as one people. Our present unification makes it easy to forget that we did not all migrate to this land in the same way. No, my brothers and sisters, while some of us came here of our own free will and fancy, there are many among us that were ferried here when a great shadow overtook and consumed their own land. I am talking, fellow Redditors, of our Digg brothers and sisters, and their arrival in the aftermath of the Diggpocalypse. For now we are all safe, cared for by our benevolent if stingy overlords at Conde Nast.
These times of prosperity make it easy to forget that our very own beloved Reddit is not immune from the shadow disease that swept over Digg. That disease of which I speak has a name in the profane tongue ... Monetization.
No my brothers and sisters, while we are allowed virtual self-rule by our benevolent overlords for now, we are allowed these privileges only at their mercy. For now we prosper but only so long as Conde grants us the privilege of self-government. Of this unspoken agreement we have no vouchsafe. For now we are largely ignored and allowed to govern over ourselves as we please, but I need not remind most of you of the precariousness of this situation.
We take false comfort in whispers from that other world, the world of "profit-driven enterprise":
"They are too difficult to monetize."
"Look at how they reject the ads we provide for them."
"They block it all with their blocking software."
"Even when they see the ads they do not click on them!"
Alas it is these very same whispers that forewarn of looming shadow plans. Our benevolent overlords for now remain bewildered as to the appropriate method by which to achieve Monetization, but they have not foresworn its eventual fulfillment. Nay, the very basis on which the Master Culture is founded demands a scheme. And as we rejoice and play, that dark shadow of Monetization perches over our own heads.
But even in these times of dark-shadow-perching, my mind is not anguished, for I am taken by a vision. I behold a vision ... of a Reddit ... liberated from the machinations of "profit-driven enterprise" ... of a Reddit ... still free and open to newcomers, but owned, funded, and governed by the wayward once-aliens who have come to call this place home. Yes, my fellow brothers and sisters, I behold the coming of a day when it will be our duty and privilege to declare our Reddipendence (Reddit Independence)!
Who am I to speak of these things? I am nobody, short of a common Redditor who recognizes the danger of our predicament. And so, on this Christmas Day's Eve, with no more than the means of a common Redditor, I humbly beseech my fellow brothers and sisters to join with me in a period of planning and rumination on the ways of and means by which we will regain from our benevolent overlords, self-sovereignty for ever and always.
