List of ways to enhance Minecraft performance

As I only have a netbook, Minecraft is very slow for me. I think there are some other people with the same problems as me, so I was wondering: Could we make a list of ways to get Minecraft to run more smoothly? I'll start:

  • GMABooster if you have an Intel graphics chip in a netbook
  • Run Linux

This could be purely coincidence, and actually makes no sense when I think about it... But when I installed the BetterLight mod, I actually found that my FPS had improved considerably.

I did this soon after the Beta update and not during Alpha, so it might have just been something Notch did and not the mod at all.

FYI, this was also AFTER the performance update that Notch did during Beta. It still improved it more so.

it's funny because the exact same thing happened to me!

Same here !!

I've found no performance boost from the occlusion mod but no degradation either, which I was expecting.

Tell your virus scanner to exclude the minecraft directories from its active scan of files being created on your computer.

If you run linux, or launch the jar file directly on any other platforms, try these options to the java command line:

-Xincgc

Incremental garbage collector, which should cut down on momentary framerate drops.

-Xmx1024M

Sets the max amount of memory that you want minecraft to have. Keeps chunks in memory longer (I hope).

-Xms512M

Kicks off the memory usage to be pretty high.

I run Xms and Xmx as the same size so that java memory isn't resizing. Not sure if there's an actual, noticeable performance boost but I've seen it recommended for other java apps.

I know everyone suggests the xms/xmx java tags but I've yet to notice any performance change with or without the tags. I'm currently running with -Xms2G, -Xmx2G (2gigs!) and the difference in performance between tags or no tags is nil.

But the game runs fine on my late '09 Mac Mini so it's hard to tell if the game's running better than fine I suppose.

edit:

as for the xincgc tag, from Sun's site: -Xincgc Enable the incremental garbage collector. The incremental garbage collector, which is off by default, will eliminate occasional garbage-collection pauses during program execution. However, it can lead to a roughly 10% decrease in overall GC performance.

Yeah, the incremental garbage collector needs the increased memory set by Xmx and Xms. That 10% is memory usage and overall speed drops. I'd rather have uninterrupted 30-40FPS, than a higher framerate that may suddenly drop to 1FPS for a few seconds. Those few seconds could be when a creeper gets me.

have you done the easy ones turn down render dist, fast not fancy, and close down other things while you play.

and not play minecraft full-screen?

On some netbooks, I've found playing fullscreen actually improves FPS, since then it's not dealing with the OS display as well as trying to draw the 3D stuff in the Minecraft window. At fullscreen it's like it can just forget about the OS for a while and just focus on the Minecraft window. This is in Windows, mind you, so I have no idea how Linux handles this kind of thing.

On my hardware, fullscreen is worse. There's not much to redraw in other windows and my desktop, and none of it's 3D, so I can't see that being a big deal. Windowed means a smaller resolution and less to draw.

what are you doing? weed? and where can i get some? XD

Everyone's doing the weed!

For some people, defragmenting your hard drive can improve performance, since when minecraft creates files for the chunks, it kind of just throws them all over the place.

Can anyone elaborate on gmabooster? Is this legitimate?

Linux users: use nice to give the game higher scheduling priority

2
ewangandprotege•

how do we do this?

1
1338h4x•

Just prefix the command to launch the game with nice #, where # ranges from -20 (highest priority) to 20 (lowest).

Thanks dude :D

Try to make the Minecraft.exe a high-priority process in the Task Manager of Windows.

You can increase the priority ('Above Normal' is a good choice) of the java vm if you play the browser version from Task Manager.

On my brother's netbook however, this results in "input lag" when he's using a USB mouse, but it works fine with the trackpad.

While this is a thread talking about boosting performance could someone give a step by step guide to increasing the server memory?

Does anyone have any ideas of how to improve the FPS on a Macbook?

1
Oanu•

Don't use mods.

If you suddenly get really poor FPS, then double check that the render distance is still set to Tiny. It's pretty easy to accidentally bump the 'F' key and increase the render distance. You can also rebind it from the Options menu.

steal windows seven

steal Game Booster

partition hard drive and get virtualclonedrive so you can mount the win7 install image on one part of your hard drive and this way you won't need to use a dvd. winvista takes 2 gigs of RAM minimum so its a real bitch. I have a a half gig so when I "upgraded" to win 7 (which says it needs a gig minimum) I saw a fivefold increase in FPS. Also because of a program called gamebooster which has a real fu about which services you don't need to run (have you ever tried to stop services through task manager? its a fucking bitch there's like a billion of 'em and a bunch will give you BSOD if you end them) anyway I know the stuff I just said is all illegal and shit so all of the above is fiction I have never done this and I don't even like computer ice cream
