Fundamental Issue With Tank RB
I think there's a fundamental problem with tanks as a game mode right now. The issue is that zone capture is the only available game mode right now, with very little variation. Yes, you have your usual 3, 2, and 1 zones that change the gameplay slightly. However, the issue arises because some tanks are absolutely not geared for this kind of gameplay and this sort of game mode encourages shoddy tactics. There's a reason the meta encourages no armor/ fast vehicles.
Slow tanks especially suffer from reduced roles in these sort of situations. Are you a tank destroyer that's waiting to ambush enemy tanks? Too bad. The points are being captured and if you are in a solid position, you will have to give it up to even ATTEMPT to get across the map to the zones before you lose too many tickets. Take your Ferdinand and head towards the middle of the map. If you weren't bombed by an airplane while sitting back, you will most definitely be flanked before you even know whats happening.
Then, there's the case of the obvious victory where one team steam rolls the other, except now we end up with a fish in a barrel situation where people either spawn in with their tanks and are immediately killed because their whole spawn is surrounded, or they leave the game early and take a time out on some of their crews because they don't want to pay the SL penalty for the repairs. The people spawn camping are forced to do so since there are no other objectives and the people in the spawn have no way to come back and are generally waterboarded while they wait for the match to finish.
Ok, so what is the solution?
I've been thinking about this and I think the battlefield could benefit from destructible spawn point bases. And not just one or two that are easily surrounded, a number of bases complete with AA, where the main point of the fight is to destroy your opponents bases. The AA would be present in order to encourage tanks to clear it out before guaranteeing bombing runs could finish off the base. The bases would be in similar spots as current spawning locations, but more spread out to the sides of the map as well, in order to spread the concentration of vehicles and allow for a wider battle field as well as full map utilization. You can keep the current zone mechanic present at the centers of maps and allow them to provide some local benefits in those areas, like ammo resupply, tank repair, and crew restoration, and reduced cooldowns for artillery. However, they should not be the main point of contest.
In this kind of situation we now have a larger front line where come backs are possible because you aren't restricted to one spawn point, bombers that can engage enemy structures instead of solely bombing enemy tanks, varied styles of play that benefit different tank types and play styles, increased cooperation between air and ground, and a decisive finish with no waiting when a team's bases are finally destroyed.
