I believe "Queer" is under-going an attempt at re-appropriation by some members of the gender-fluid crowd.

I don't agree with it personally as its definition (of queer) is deliberately to give a term for being out of the ordinary, it doesn't actually definitively describe anything by itself. I do just wish they'd let its use as a term for gender and sexuality just die already.

I've observed attempts to reclaim "queer" since the 70s.

Ah, well there we are then!

How do you feel about it?

I, actually, would like to reclaim "queer" for its original meaning of "weird" or "strange".

As for an umbrella term for sexual minorities, it's up to the people involved.

However, the earlier attempt were just to make queer an acceptable synonym for homosexual, whereas the current trend seems to just be another way to hide the trans among the gay.

It reminds me of an article i read on the New Testament parable about wheat and tares. Tares refers to weeds whose seeds are hard to seperate from the wheat and so dilute thecrop. Jesus says just plant all the seeds and seperate them after they grow. According to this article, in the 2000 years since, tares have evolved greater and greater mimickry, making it harder than ever to seperate, but still unlike actual wheat, they provide no nutrition.

Ah, insightful stuff. Thank you for your input. :)

Queer seems to be a political position and worldview.

Like people say Buttigieg is gay but not queer because he lives a "heteronormative" life

This is the most egregious example of the use of the word "queer"to talk about homosexual men who were killed by the Nazis.
I'm in my 50s, I remember a time when queer was only ever used as an insult by homophobes, being shouted at people in the street and chanted by thugs as they beat gay men up. No amount of "reclaiming" is going to make it acceptable to me, especially now it's been completely hijacked by straight oddballs to describe their sexual foibles and fashion choices.

Being a straight, I wouldn't use it anyhow.

About 14ish years ago my gay friend told me he got the crap kicked out of him by 3 people who were shouting the Q and F.

I was surprised at how it's making a comback.

Edited my math. I'm only mostly old.

And while we're on it, can tumblr please stop calling Anne Frank queer? That's not how she or her family wanted her to be remembered.

I have a special hatred for the people who think it's a cute idea to posthumously turn a murdered child into a goddam LGBTQAIIPWTF icon. Especially since we know that Anne herself censored the pages in her diary that discussed sexuality because they were private and no teenage girl wants that shit to be published (plus, she likely knew that people would focus on the lurid passages of her diary instead of the fact that she and her entire race were victims of a systematic genocide).

This post is specifically about not calling people who lived in the past who didn't call themselves queer and for whom queer was used against them, queer. And to not call gay/bi people who are alive now who dislike being called queer, queer.

It says nothing about living people who call themselves queer of their own volition. Learn to read
