Depends what you mean by co-op.
Of the many NES co-op games, it's probably the one most likely to be played given a choice, but my inner perfectionist will always be going "stop jumping, you're making shoes spawn!, now fall down the pit a bunch of times to get more potions"... plus it is one of my most wanted games on Steam right now (either the original arcade, or Neo)
But for top 5 co-op? I have to put 8 Eyes on top due to the novelty of asymmetrical co-op. The second player can hit several secret walls and hit some enemies that the first player cannot (in 1 player mode you do get limited use of the second player, he kinda flies around on his own a bit, but in 2 player mode it's majestic how well you can play together thanks to the combat mechanics)
After that, any of the arcade pushes like the TMNT sequels, Double Dragon sequels, Contra... Bubble Bobble would go here, and would be by top pick in this category.
But beyond those... there really isn't a whole lot of co-op games on the NES (unless you count stuff like meta-progression in Mario 3 or something)
It's a great game but not top 5 co-op for me... it would come behind Contra, Super C, Battletoads, Double Dragon II, Double Dragon III, Gauntlet, R.C. Pro Am II, Super Tecmo Bowl, Bad News Baseball, Super Dodgeball ... but over Snake Rattle and Roll, Ikari Warriors, etc. etc.
There's a lot of decent NES 2 player games...
In the classic arcade category it's up there though, just behind Gauntlet for me.
Top 5 co-op? Personally, I never liked ranking games. The rating system always seem to do it best for me. A thorough F... an A-. Not too much to complain on this one. Solid co-op with one player being able to revive the other with no lives. Able to work together on bubble stacking. Both characters always on screen. IMO, only thing that would have made it slightly better would have been a cooperative mode.
