I was at the game and I was wondering if he meant to do that

I think he did, earlier this season on a fast break he purposefully missed the lay up just so the trailing defender would goal tend him, he’s super crafty and smart when he’s on

Uh why would he do this? Whats the benefit? There is no extra penalty for goal tending.

It’s an easy 2 points to bait the guy into goaltending. Better to do that than get blocked or miss a lay up

I guess I'm not understanding how you could purposely miss in such a way that would cause a goaltend, that is better than trying to make the layup.

I wonder how the stats counted it? Missed shot? Assist?

Definitely no assist because Ayton is fouled right after. I would imagine its a missed shot and a rebound because its hard to tell if it was a pass.

Let’s say he meant to do it (which we think he did) and Ayton doesn’t get fouled and puts it up and in. I wonder if that’s then an assist or if there is a rule that anything off the backboard is a shot attempt.

I just went and looked and it doesn't give Rubio a missed shot or Ayton a rebound so you were right, they considered it a pass. If Ayton isnt fouled Rubio is getting the assist there. Thats pretty dope

Thanks jerry!

I think its up to the score keepers discretion, but I'd have to imagine if its not super obvious that its a pass they rule it a shot. I might actually try and find a gamelog or something that has the time a stat was recorded and might be able to see if Ayton got a rebound there or not.
