Harmony Hub & Remote - is it worth it?

Discussion

I've read a lot of reviews about the Harmony remotes and they are all over the place. I've seen people saying to avoid completely as it's slow and buggy, I've seen people say it works perfectly. Is there a reason for the variations? It seems to be one of the best solutions for controlling the entire entertainment area (and smart devices elsewhere) assuming it actually works.

Anyone with some first hand experience?

Edit: Wow thanks for all the replies everyone! This is far more first hand impressions than I was getting by searching. Based on the positives I think I'll give it a go once I've got my room all set up. I'm no stranger to troubleshooting and tinkering so I think it should go fine, key is getting it set up well enough the wife doesn't hate it. Thanks again!

I have three Harmony Elites on 3 relatively different systems and the worst problem I have ever had is the one of the PS4s lost BT pairing.

The responsiveness isn't as fast as a normal IR remote since you are essentially sending a RF signal from the remote to the hub that then sends out either IR or BT commands.

There are people that do not like them but I would chalk that up to them improperly configuring their remote or they have a defective one.

amart591•

Wait, the Elite can control the PS4? How does that work? I have a pretty old 650 model and the setup program says it can't control the PS4 which would have been nice although not really a priority anymore.

2
_mutelight_https://imgur.com/a/nWyXmBj•

It pairs via BT as a "keyboard" and you get all the face buttons, navigation etc.

Sony are boneheads and don't allow the PS4 to be woken up by anything but the controller or the face button, nor do they have an IR receiver so you do have to manually power it up. The remote can control it though and when you leave the activity, it will do a series of automated inputs to put it in rest mode.

Francky•

Easy solution I've found though, is to have ECC on in your AVR and playstation. So when the Harmony switched the AVR to the PS4, it wakes up, then you are good to go.

Unfortunately I already have CEC disabled because it's frustratingly inconsistent and causes issues. The only setup I have where it works right is a simple TV + soundbar + roku

1
_mutelight_https://imgur.com/a/nWyXmBj•

Ah yes, CEC is an option I had totally forgotten about since I disabled it so long ago. My main system is really complex with over 10 devices connected so it never worked reliably for me but worth people trying out to see if it works for them.

1
amart591•

That's both cool and dumb at the same time, I wish the PS4 would have just had an IR receiver for the basic play/pause/forward/reverse or whatever for media. I hate using the controller for that.

I have mine properly setup and I prefer using regular remotes with hdmi-cec. I know cec isnt the best and can be annoying sometimes, like when my nvidia shield wants to fight my computer to display on the tv. But I prefer the responsiveness to the little bit easier use.

_mutelight_https://imgur.com/a/nWyXmBj•

That's the great thing about the remote, you can go the CEC route, direct IR, BT, and IP control, so there is a lot of flexibility.

In my setups with CEC, all my devices just start yelling at one another for attention.

I can't agree that it's as responsive as the regular remote. On my Denon 4500h, if I press the volume button 5 times to lower it by that value, it goes down instantly. The Logitech remote seems to queue those actions and it'll keep going down long after I finished clicking 5 times.

Also the myharmony software is incredibly annoying to use. Some basic features also lack, or I couldn't find them maybe, like sending a power off command to a certain device when an activity starts. Or keeping devices of a previous activity alive when starting another one.

E.g. I got an activity to start my TV and receiver, and one to start my projector and close window blinds. I'd love to power off only the TV when swapping to the projector, nothing else. Also can't add an activity to start a certain playing device and set the receiver to the correct input, since that will shutdown whatever other devices (TV, projector) I had booted up in a different activity. Pretty clunky overall, you can't even change the order of activities through the software and the goddamn swipe action information keeps showing up on the remotes display - despite already clicking "don't show again" a dozen times at least.

But maybe I just did it wrong, which is also very likely since I only got it two weeks ago.

Which is why I said it isn't as responsive.

You can set power behavior for each individual device in the activity settings.

You can change the order of the activities through the app or directly on the remote.

Oh, my bad, I misread. I'll try to change the power settings then, but I'm pretty sure I tried that and the drop-down menu didn't work/was disabled. I'll give it a shot through the app since that seems to be further developed than the pc application, that one feels like it's stuck in 2002 in terms of design, features and usability. Thanks for the tips.

Yeah the mobile app surpassed the desktop app quite some time ago and by a large margin. I can't remember the last time they updated the Silverlight powered "desktop app".

2
GFor1015•

Try changing the interkey delay. That helps a ton with the responsiveness.

4
animelov•

So, I agree on the responsiveness... It's the remote itself having to "wake up". Once awake, it's fine. I have the elite and the regular remote and hub combo, and id buy the regular one again in a heartbeat. The only problem is that I'm the only who remembers what activity button does on the regular remote, so the elite works better in terms of user friendliness.

3
KingSculpin•

I think that people who say it's slow and buggy, and the people who say it works perfectly are both correct.

As others have said, it's all about the configuration. I'm a chronic tweaker. I get high on messing around with settings. It's an addiction.

I experienced the slow and buggy for quite some time until I tweaked my inter-key delay settings on my Denon. I set them all to 0ms. In my setup, it's instant. No lag at all (it was literally set, by default, to increase lag (latency/delay).

As for the app... it will always be painfully slow. Use it to program the remote, then forget about it.

I personally bought the Harmony Companion remote over the Elite for four reasons:

  • It has more hardware buttons (0-9 keypad; programed for everything but 0-9 buttons 🙃)
  • It doesn't have a screen. I personally think it looks better. I like that the Companion looks like a "normal" remote.
  • It doesn't need to be charged. The Elite last two days on charge, but I'm the type to forget once and a while. Again, personal preference; but, I like that the Companion's battery last for years on battery swaps vs two days on a charge.
  • It's much cheaper. I got mine for $99 Canadian (refurb)
14
jnwatson•

OMG. How did you tweak the inter-key delay settings? I love the Harmony, but the lag sucks.

7
KingSculpin•

Under the Devices tab there's an option to Edit Device, then click on your Denon reciever. Under those settings click on FIX DELAY.

I changed every delay to 0ms with great results! Except for POWER ON DELAY which is set to 2ms; I can't tell you why 🤷‍♂️ There may, or may not, have been a reason.

7
sivartk•

I personally bought the Harmony Companion remote over the Elite for four reasons:

I almost bought a companion, but my sound bar is at the edge of my TV stand and there is no place to put the IR blaster to make sure the sound bar picks it up. The Companion remote doesn't have an IR emitter so everything needs to go through the blaster. So for the moment I'm using a crazy combination of my Harmony 650 + TV's CEC. I only have to manually power on my Android TV box and then the Harmony 650 can handle most of the rest.

3
cdj18862•

For what it's worth, the hub works really well as a blaster, and you don't need line of sight. I use a companion and my hub sits 2 shelves higher and behind my receiver but still works.

4
PMaxxGaming•

I can vouch for this. I have no idea how it does it, but my hub occasionally gets blocked by things being set on the shelf or whatever, but despite being physically blocked from certain devices, or on a different shelf with the cabinet closed; it always still works. I have no use for the included IR blasters because that hub seems to be able to send IR through solid wood and glass somehow lol

3
reddit0832•

The Hub does it by acting like the IR equivalent of a flood light. It basically bounces IR off the entire surrounding room to make it back to the device. Compared to most remotes, which are the IR equivalent of a dinky keychain flashlight.

1
KingSculpin•

I almost bought a companion, but... The Companion remote doesn't have an IR emitter so everything needs to go through the blaster.

My Companion came with a Harmony Hub (capable of Bluetooth, Wifi, and IR), plus an IR dongle that attaches to the Hub for extra reach to out-of-sight IR devices.

Perhaps your confused with a different Logitech remote?

1
sivartk•

Right I understand that but how do you make the dongle hover in mid air in front of the sound bar? There is no ledge to sit it on in front of the sound bar and the nearest wall to bounce it off of is 20ish feet away.

The elite model as an example does have an IR emitter in the remote for issues like this.

1
KingSculpin•

I see what you're saying. I somehow skimmed over the IR in the remote part. That's a huge advantage. I have all my equipment in another room; everything except for the projector. For that reason, the companion isn't able to control the projector, but the Elite would be able to. I didn't know about this!

All valid points but worth mentioning only 3 dedicated activity buttons vs. a list of soft buttons with labels and limited to 8 devices vs 15.

There are certainty reasons to get the Elite over the Companion. I'd be interested in the list of soft buttons, that sounds great.

3 dedicated activity buttons

There's actually 6 (you can hold each down for different activities). Still more limited than the Elite, but 6 is more than enough for my setup.

7
CoolHandPB•

and you can add more activities to your phone. 99% of the time i use the remote but I need to use my phone when I want to play My Nintendo Switch.

2
robotdinofight•

It's also worth mentioning that you can start with the harmony hub & companion, then add a 950 remote (same as the elite) or an old harmony Ultimate One or Touch remote once you have more than 8 devices. Either of those remotes will pair with the harmony hub and increase your device limit to 15. Oh, and you can also have both the companion remote AND the touchscreen remote active and paired at the same time. This is useful to keep things simple for spouses or kids (using the companion remote with simple activities) while still having all the things available on the big boy remotes. See here for details: https://support.myharmony.com/en-us/harmony-add-on

Me too. Number pad keys for the win -- so essential.

The only thing I wish it had was backlighting for the buttons. And I'm only getting about a year and a half out of the battery, but they are cheap enough so it's no big deal.

1
KingSculpin•

The only thing I wish it had was backlighting for the buttons.

I agree. But I use the lightbulb button to turn on my Hue lights so I can see the buttons. It's not perfect, but it works!

My wife loves the companion remote, we have 4. In the home theater I have the ultimate, and she tolerates that pretty well. It is much better than the smaller elite. So we have 5 hubs. As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing better at the consumer level.

1
elcheapodeluxe7.2.4 w/ NHT 2.9's, Yamaha A-S2100, LG OLED B7P, Yamaha RX-A3070•

I have had the elite with a hub for quite some time. Other than the lack of ability to use it as an IFTTT trigger and lack of compatibility with any of my Kasa smart light switches (only Hue lights) I am mostly pleased. Take advantage of the extra IR blasters included with the hub or, better yet, wire the outputs to the IR in jacks on your components for rock solid connections. Before doing that I'd have the odd component that wouldn't turn on every now and then from a missed command. Since wiring the IR ports to the hub it is a total non issue - I can't remember the last time I missed a command.

There is one other mild annoyance. It seems like the connection between the remote and hub stays in an "active" state for a handful of seconds. If one presses fast forward and then play a few seconds later - the play is instant. If I spend too long fast forwarding through commercials then the play takes a few seconds to register which means I have far overshot where I intended to stop. That could be remote to hub or it could be hub to tivo. Not sure where the delay is - but I just have been in the habit of hitting play and then fast forward again after I've gone through about four or five commercials to keep the connection "alive". Minor annoyance.

I haven't found anything comparable for the price. I have so many components (tv, receiver, integrated amp, apple tv, shield, roku, tivo, blu ray, wii, two computers, turntable) it would be a nightmare to use individual remotes. Also, using voice commands to "Alexa, Pause Tivo" or "Alexa, turn off TV" when the cat has you pinned or when you're in another room helps a lot :)

I also have an older harmony 650 (and have had a few others like my dearly departed Harmony One). Keep in mind that you used to have to use "software" to configure those, while now you do all of the configuration through the Harmony app on a phone or tablet. The app configuration method seems far better to me. No more looking around for where I left that mini (not micro) usb cable.

5
thirdspaceL•

Completely agree with all the points on this, especially the convenience of voice commands (yelling at Alexa to turn everything on from a room on the other side of the house is REALLY convenient when you have a projector that has to warm up and a screen that has to drop down). The Harmony has annoying bits, but in the end it mostly makes up for it. I do wish there was some other competitor in the same market segment (there are some really awesome remotes that cost WAY more) because I always feel like Logitech is on the edge of killing the thing, and they don't have much impetus to improve on the pretty terrible software.

3
hawks64•

Your Alexa is working with it? Damn, mine stopped working months ago and nothing has worked to fix. Deleting the skill, relinking, deleting the remote and rebuilding it. There are a bunch of reviews recently that have had the same issue I am running into. It really sucks since I used to use it all the time.

1
acragas10•

I have three Harmony Ultimate Home Touch with Hubs. The most difficult and frustrating part, and that which requires a bit of patience, is getting the initial setup done. There's a pretty simple initial setup walkthrough, but there's also a lot of commands and rules you can create that are not really thoroughly explained and takes some time to figure out. Once you get everything set up like you want it, as well as find the right spot for your hub and IR blaster (and possibly invest in an additional IR blaster too, depending on your setup) then it's worked pretty much flawlessly. The delay hasn't been noticeable enough for me, and the tradeoff has been worth it.

4
Peon25•

I love my old school 650 / 665 series. Have 2 of them.

4
Psych0matt•

I have 2 650s and an Ir blaster, I love them. Thought about upgrading to a hub and elite but I don’t have anything smart based that would require or even use it

4
Delex31•

These are a godsend for my parents. I program it for them, they don't have to remember which remote to pick up and it is simple to use. Battery life is my only major issue with them.

2
hammondyouidiot•

I expect most people who complain about poor performance either didn’t setup properly or have the patience to tweak the setup to get it working properly. Yes there is some slight delay on commands, and no voice control for Apple TV, but the pros far outweigh the cons. To name a few: One remote for literally everything (mine even controls my fan). Custom routines to always start the tv on a certain channel. Custom shortcuts with graphics on the screen. I could go on.

4
shitiseeincollege•

The lag from clicking a button to the action happening was too annoying for me and got rid of them all.

4
Proffarnsworth3000•

I would agree, there is definitely a slight lag when using the non-hub based Harmony remotes. I find the hub based remotes to be a lot more responsive and pretty much on par with my equipment's included remotes.

2
shitiseeincollege•

That’s good to know, I gave up before ever trying the hub style remotes.

2
Proffarnsworth3000•

I’ve been using Harmony remotes for years and the hub based remotes are night and day better. Activities start faster and not needing line of sight for IR is very nice. Not to mention the other features like Bluetooth and home automation.

Wait are the non-hub ones the IR ones? And you are saying those are slower than one that connects to a hub? Because that seems backwards.

That said I enjoy my hub based remote minus that it works like shit if the internet goes down since activities are apparently cloud based which is annoying.

1
Proffarnsworth3000•

Yes, the non hub ones are slower and IR. I know it seems backwards but here we are. :)

Weird the top comment here says the opposite. I've noticed some lag on mine but it's more like the type of lag you notice when you don't have your TV in game mode, so basically a non-issue. I haven't compared it to other Logitech remotes to see if those are worse like you said though, just to my original IR remotes.

I have 4 Harmony remotes in my house. 2 of them are the Elites w/ hub. They are a must have in my opinion but once you've had one you'll never go back.

3
AztinOP•

I'm liking these positive first hand reviews. I'll definitely look into this more then. They can integrate with Alexa and home assistant too correct? I'm thinking I could set this up so the remote is usable for anyone and also can say something like 'Alexa let's watch a movie' and have all the right equipment turn on, lights dim, right inputs, etc.

3
robotdinofight•

The Harmony Hub communicates with alexa, but has no voice input. But you can set up actions like "watch a movie" into an echo dot to have it trigger.

3
Proffarnsworth3000•

There is a specific voice control remote, the Harmony Express, but the rest of them don't support voice commands as far as I know. I've got two Smart Control remotes and one Home Companion. The home companion lets me control smart home devices via the remote, but doesn't add any sort of voice control.

Edit: if you have an Echo/google home you can trigger your Harmony hub via voice commands.

Skipped the remote and just buy the hub. Get my Harmony software for dedicated tablet. You will have control over functions that even the needed remote for the device doesn't offer. You can switch between devices with a touch and set up "activities" — unfortunately, only for entertainment devices. Also, works with Alexa, but I leave the Fire Cube to that.

3
AztinOP•

Oh I hadn't thought of that, if I get a fire TV Cube (planning on it) would the two clash? Like both trying to respond to the same command?

2

I have the hub and it’s great. I have mine paired with an echo dot and the voice stuff works great. The phone app is also good if you need direct control. I absolutely hate the basic remote that comes with it though. I never use it. It just sits in a drawer.

3
Hakaisha_27•

I have a hub w/ echo as well. Works fantastic 99% of the time. Had issues when I upgraded my TV but got that sorted eventually.

3
ElderFormori•

I have a Harmony Ultimate One on the upstairs living room TV with a hub paired, they work great once the configuration is correct and are so easy to use that my wife's parents use it!

I think people's biggest issues are when trying to configure the activities and devices they just need to slow down and read through all of the screens to understand what the remote wants. Since I fixed my config last fall I haven't had a single issue. I'm looking to pick up a Harmony Elite with hub for the theatre downstairs once I'm closer to finishing.

2

I have a harmony hub and it works well for me. I don't have a harmony remote, I use the Android app on my phone and Google home for voice control.

Setup process is very slow and can be frustrating. The UI/UX isn't very 2020 either. Responsiveness isn't instant. But at the end of the day...there isn't anything that doesn't cost and require dealer configuration. So it's pretty much the only option and while it has number of shortcomings, it works decent enough I'm mostly happy with mine. Sure is better than using three or four remotes to do things.

2
douger1957•

I love mine. The only problem I have it very intermittently it won't turn the LG TV off. If I shut it off with the LG remote, it'll sync again until the next time.

2

Yes. It is worth it

2
concentus7Peel that damn sticker off...•

It's definitely the best product currently available "off the shelf", but it's not perfect but any means. With setup alone, there's a significant learning curve. But when setup correctly, nothing else can really compete.

The only better solution would be a professionally programmed remote from the big-name integrators like Control4 and Savant, which is only available to their customers.

2
jnwatson•

I can't remember how to turn on my system by hand anymore. Everything for me is my voice -> Google Home -> Harmony -> equipment. Also, my A/V tower is in another room from the TV, so the regular remotes wouldn't work anyways.

I only use the Harmony remote as a backup. For the TV, it is hard to beat the LG remote with the visual pointer.

2
norhor•

I bought it cheap on BF last year. I found that I still has to use some of my other remotes from time to time, so I don't really think it does it job in replacing other remotes. It is also a bit slow and laggy. as you say. And it doesn't work well with BT.

However, it's a cool gadget that is fun to tinker and adjust with. If you can live with what I wrote over, you will like it

2
BadDecisionPolice•

The hub has been the most unreliable hardware I have purchased and one of the coolest when it works. Sometimes is just stops working. Sometimes some of the verbal commands that worked, stopped working. The entire thing stopped working for two months. Then it worked partially and then it worked again. Logitech has been zero help. Resetting did not work. Oh and when you rebuild the thing it is a long process for someone with several devices requiring a multiple sequence list for an action. I spent too much time on it. The hub is apparently trying to control my tv by IP and it does not work and there is no option for IR. So be warned I have to have a completely different remote in parallel with the hub. I have two programmable Logitech remotes that are much much better than the hub. But when it works with verbal only responses it is cool.
