Should I change jobs. I apologize for the wall of text. Could use some help.

I need help deciding if I should change jobs. Right now I am a Field Supervisor in the gas patch "oil field" in the Marcellus region. I make $21/hr and work ~80 hours/week. I have 2 young children and a wife at home. Currently I've worked 15 of the last 18 months out of town, and amounting to ~70 days home in the last 1.5 years. We just bought a house, and recently I've felt this overwhelming sense of guilt passing all my responsibilities onto my wife while she raises our children. Work is moving up North where I live so from April to December I will actually be home every night. Which is a bonus.

Another place I have been working the last 5 years is a landscaping company. He helps me out when the field gets slow, and it's always just been an open door for me. He asked what it would take to get me to stay full time. So we had a lunch meeting, and he offered me $21/hr, a work truck, and basically as many hours as I want. It is 30 minutes from my house, and will always be there. I will be home every night (even though it may be late), no over nights, no sundays, and no out of towns. The issue is that they do not provide health care. I will basically be maxed out as far as money and promotions go here. If I don't take this job, and screw this guy over it will ruin our "open door" relationship if things get slow in the field.

So I put my 2 weeks notice in, and now my current company has offered me ~$25/hr, a promotion, and I can pick my schedule essentially (10 on 2 off, 14 on 4 off, 30 on 7 off).

Thanks in advance everyone <3

Sounds like the oil company has more to offer and is more competitive for you to work there. At this point id consider job security versus the distance that it requires you to go/be away from family. It seems like since you made your intentions clear to them they offered you more freedom etc. Personally I dont see a reason to keep going with the two week notice since they are capable of giving you more time to be with family and 16% pay bump.

The other thing about staying where I'm at is that it only takes one spill, or incident and the energy company will run our company off. So guaranteed work April to December is not guaranteed. You know :-/

I'd look elsewhere. With your current title, you should be able to look for a other manager/supervisor job in a similar industry. You can also look for more of an administrative or desk job in your current industry with a competitor. Family comes first and I get that you have to financially support them and it's TRUE money cant buy happiness or get rid of your guilt of not being home. Dont be afraid to venture out and try something new. I traveled 2 weeks out of every month for a long time in a great paying sales job. When my wife and I started having kids, it just wasnt worth missing all the family time after a while. O switched roles, industry altogether and it's been the best decision I've ever made.
