Question about Synaptics Touchpads

I have a Dell Studio 1555 and find the touchpad under Ubuntu/Gnome to be wildly erratic, especially when typing (cursor will move around, select text and words get deleted often). In Windows the behavior is the same unless I install the Synaptics drivers, which without any additional configuration makes the touchpad work great. But it also provides finer grained controls like pressure sensitivity. I've disabled touch while typing in Gnome but this does not mitigate the problem. Is there a package that allows similar fine-grained tuning of the touchpad like the Windows driver?

sudo apt-get install gpointing-device-settings

then System -> Preferences -> Pointing Devices to adjust your settings

I turned off horizontal scrolling and bumped up the min and max speed to perfect my Dell Adamo.

why not edit your xorg, should work for Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10

There are more details on the Arch Wiki. Take special note of on-the-fly configuration, this will help you greatly finding deltas for scrolling and such.

i have a script set to run on startup as the settings dont seem to stick otherwise. i use an ACER laptop so settings may need a bit of tweeking.
