This might be a really dumb question, but why doesn't obi wan remember R2 in episode 4?

Or why does he at least claim he doesn't know R2? Thank you for the help!

He does know him, but he's keeping things secret from Luke.

Of course, the real answer is Lucas changed his ideas when he got round to the prequels.

This is exactly it. Up until he sees the message and realizes it's time to bring Luke and get back into the fight. He's playing coy. He's still playing dumb, for lack of a better phrase. He doesn't know where this is going and isn't sure he's ready to explain everything to Luke.

It's not like he's going to respond with "I didn't own him, your Father did. He was there when your Father went on a killing spree and became Darth Vader. We went on many adventures together, it was great."

It makes a lot of sense why he would be hesitant to talk to Luke about that stuff. Thank you for your help!

If I remember right, he claimed to not remember owning R2 which technically is right. R2 wasn’t ever his property.

It’s basically the same reason why he wasn’t fully honest about Vader / Anakin, to stop Luke from asking questions.

Oh OK, that makes sense. Thanks so much!

He said, "I don't remember owning a droid."

“I don’t seem to remember ever owning a droid”

In the ANH novel tho, Kenobi says to R2 “it's good to fly with you again, my old friend".

Edit : the novel this quote is from is The Princess, The Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy and not the original ANH novelization

Only in The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy retelling, not the original novelization itself.

Correct ...it wasn’t an issue when the original novel was released and I should’ve made that point

He does remember him, but he's not going to tell their entire history together in front of Luke

He’s basically a space boomer. Boomers don’t know shit.

Because the movie was written in 1977 before they thoight of anything else.

There's millions of astromechs in the galaxy. What are the odds he would instantly ID this one as R2?

Or, Obi-Wan thought R2 would be wiped by now so he didn't act like he recognized R2 because he thought R2 wouldn't recognize him?

Or, George was making this shit up as he went along. 🤣

In real life it’s obvious why and in universe it’s because one he told Luke he doesn’t remember owning a droid which is true because he never did (R4 doesn’t count as that was the property of the Jedi) and also became he was still hiding things from Luke.
