Switching hospital departments
minirant/ Started volunteering at a big name hospital. They wasted an entire fall semester of my time applying so that I pretty much started in the end of december until now. On their website when I applied and in the interview I was promised the ability to get patient interaction and to learn about how everything works and possibly shadow. I made it clear that was indeed why I applied. Now I do nothing but file papers and write down mrn numbers for the secretaries. The volunteer coordinator made it sound like she was going to talk to the head of the department and let them know I wanted to shadow and to at least let me see how everything works. But this supposed conversation never happened. Honestly the day i volunteer is the only day I have free time and my most busiest day and I feel like I am squandering hours out of my day that could be doing something more productive like more mcat studying. So I talked to the volunteer coordinators secretary (she was out at the time) and she said they could switch me to the emergency department but I would need more training. And I explained that that is the kind of thing I signed up for to happen in the first place. So now I am going to go over to the lady now that she is back and tell her I want to switch. It doesn't have to be right this second if it is inconvenient but sometime in the near future.
