How is Shinji responsible for the third impact? Why is Misato treating him as the enemy?

Rebuild

Yes, Shinji tried to save Rei and ended up accidentally fusing the angels core with the Eva 01 and Lilith's soul (not that anyone told him that would happen or tried to stop him or told him not to, Misato even encouraged him to do it). But the impact was stopped by Kaworu with the Spear of Cassius.

It was the 12th angel possessing the Mark 6.0 , and Rei's clones fusing with Lilith's body that caused the third impact killing all those people, and Misato knew this since it was her who ordered to take the Spear of Cassius from the Eva 01 to impale this new fusion.

So why is everyone acting like it was Shinji and not Gendo/Rei/12th Angel? Shinji wasn't even awake when that happened!!!!

They dont hate Shinji. They hate what he did.

They hate themselves for unwittingly making impact possible. Because of how Gendo manipulated them.

The real problem is everyone in 3.0 IQ dropped 100 points, and no one took a moment to explain anything to Shinji.

The way i look at it.

Misato, and Asuka now know how Gendo used them to ruin Shinji because how all 3 of their personalities and psychosis clash.

So seeing Shinji again, after 14 years. It triggered them. They got so wrapped up in thier own heads, they didnt realise what they where doing to Shinji all over again.

As a example, Gendos plan is to drive him insane so he couldnt control instrumentality. When unit 01 became the catalyst. Something Rei 3 fixed in the original series.

In comparison, it seems the key to making unit 01 the catalyst is Shinjis emotions. Misato, and Asuka are manlipulated to repel Shinji, so he is drawn to Rei.

Heres the thing though. Shinji didn't do the thing the story says he did. He couldn't have. 3.33 treats Shinji like the stinger at the end of 2.22 didn't happen. Kaworu speared Eva Unit 01 with the lance and stopped the Impact. The landscape wasn't red, the entire planet wasn't destroyed, there weren't half formed headless eva units walking around. . . and then 3.33 basically says "Y'know that thing at the end of the movie before the 'next time preview? didn't happen. Shinji caused the impact and that's why the world is like this." Shinji destroyed the Geofront. Thats bad. But it wasn't so bad that it warranted a bomb around his neck and death threats!

Because if Anno didn't retcon/ignore Kaworu stopping the impact, if he didn't make it so that didn't happen. He couldn't justify Misato and Wille treating Shinji like garbage for causing the end of the world, because he couldn't have because the Eva unit was stopped before it could cause as much damage as it supposedly did in 3.33!

But Anno couldn't justify things like Evas in space and the flying Wunder ship if the destruction of the planet wasn't Shinjis fault. So he just ignored what happened at the end of 3.33 and the events for the 3.33 movie we should have gotten in the 'next time preview' purely to make it Shinji's fault. . . and to me? Thats a Lazy retcon purely for the sake of an edgy twist that didn't need to happen.

a separate impact happened between 2.0 and 3.0.

The more reason not to blame Shinji for the third impact, he was litteraly sleeping in space when that happened.

Basically something happened between movies which involved Shinji and it looks like he completely forgot, another theory could be that while trying to get Shinji out of unit 01 like in anime, something went wrong and it went beserk, got central dogma and caused third impact.

I genuinely think Anno will clear things up in last one tbh.

I don't think it's a retcon. Two events happened, the N3I and the actual Third Impact (let's call it A3I). The N3I was stopped after Kaworu impaled Unit 01 with the spear of Cassius, but another event happened between 2.0 and 3.0 with the involvement of Lilith, an autonomous Mark 06, the 12th angel and possibly an awakened Unit 01 too (assuming Unit 01 happened to awaken again after someone pulled Cassius out).

WILLE "hates" Shinji for awakening Unit 01, they put the DSS choker around his neck because according to Ritsuko, he's a threat to everyone for being a potential Eva awakener. Kaworu tells Shinji this: "Eva Unit 01 awakened and opened the Doors of Guf, acting as the trigger of the Third Impact. The Lilin call that the Near Third Impact. You are the cause of all of this." What's interesting to me about this sentence is that it seems to imply Kaworu doesn't think of the event that happened at the end of 2.0 as the N3I. He was clearly talking about the N3I in that scene but he calls it Third Impact instead, only to say that the Lilin call said event "Near Third Impact". In other words, Kaworu thinks of the N3I and A3I as two acts of the same event, the Third Impact. To Kaworu, the N3I is the beginning of the 3I because all someone had to do was pull Cassius out of Unit 01 for the impact to resume. Kaworu also says the Awakened Unit 01 was the trigger of the Third Impact, not Shinji. The reason why all of this was Shinji's fault is because he awakened Unit 01.

Nobody is acting anything. Shinji is a walking thermonuclear bomb easy to manipulate and extremly childish. That he just nearly ended the world last time doesn't make him look any better. They even suspexted that Gendo could use him for an impact.

By the way Dr. Akagi, if you thought this was possible then why didn't you explain any of this to Shinji... I know, busy job but still

Anyways the crew is nervous for a reason, I can't blame them. Whatever turned Misato into this coldhearted captain will hopefully be explained in 3.0+1.0, and Asuka is being Asuka, making it hard to understand what's going on inside her.

Of course he is childish, he is a child. Misato was the adult both now (39) and back then (25), she should have known better, or at least not expect a mature response out of a child, and of course he is explosive, he is 14, it is the adults around him who put him on a thermonuclear weapon to begin with, everyone used him, he never wanted to be a pilot in the first place.

And if they are so terrified of Gendo using Shinji then maybe they should have treated him with at least a little bit of kindness and empathy instead of basically pushing him towards Gendo. I hope it is explained why Misato is this cold, but still was no excuse to treat Shinji like that, it really made me dislike the members of Wille.

They wanted to guarantee his safety on the Wunder, they would have explained everything to him sooner or later. That just failed horribly. They got attacked like an hour after Shinji woke up and Wille had bigger problems at the time.

Out of Shinji's perspective Wille just doesn't care about him and also lied about Rei. He tries to listen but he gets ignored, not to mention the bomb around his head. The chocker had to be explained and Ritsuko did less then poorly. Also Misato pointing the trigger at Shinji the moments something unexpected happens. She could have talked him out of escaping easily if she tried. "Shinji you have to stay, that Eva isn't Unit 00 this is a trap!"Just anything really.

I'm not blaming Shinji for anything. He can't help it either I know. But I'm sure a lot of people at Wille would want him gone for the sake of humanity. Also why does everyone distrust him so much? The chocker is justified, but the guards, the way they cuffed him and the prison cell, why?

They would have explained everything eventually. This situation isn't easy for anyone, especially for Misato and Asuka. Gendo just bursted in at the perfect time. Had he came 5 minutes earlier or an hour later then Shinji would have probably stayed.

I don't think the choker was necessary either, they could have explained him why he couldn't, I think he would have understood.

Something happened between what we see at the end of 2.22 and 3.33, combine with the fact that Shinji is mentally unstable and easy to manipulate results and 14 years having passed results in crew of Wille acting the way they did.

I've been living with the assumption that while Unit 01 was drawing Rei into its self after "de-bodying" Zeruel, that Lilith was simultaneously undergoing some sort of sympathetic evolution, where it was fusing Rei clones with the Eva rejects and "en-souling" them with the souls of Tokyo 3 citizens.

Basically Unit 01 awakening, caused some sort of reaction with the inert Lilith.

Kaworu stops near 3rd impact by Casius lance.

Then proceeds to terminal dogma and aborts the actual 3rd impact, by integrating unit 06 with Lilith.

Then, the post 2.0, 3.0 preview stuff happens. Where the UN arrest Nerv personnel, Gendo and Kouzo are in some sort of desert, and all the pilots has some sort of meet up, before Shinji and unit 01 get sealed in that tesseract.

3.0 is very interesting in that it actively puts the viewer into Shinji's shoes... even though those are very limited, childish, biased and even selfish shoes. Even thinking that he is himself responsible for everything and hated by everyone is yet again Shinji projecting that somehow must be at the center of everything. To say nothing of Kaworu's magical quick fix plan that is supposed to just erase Shinji's mistakes without him needing to actually change anything about himself as a person or even apologize to anyone.

The amount of evidence in the movie *overwhelmingly* points at Shinji not actually being hated but Wille being (very reasonably) wary of him in a context that is just a huge clusterfuck of perfect conditions for Seele/Gendo/Kaworu to play him. But you have to look at it, it literally changes the whole movie.

Except that there is no way for him to misunderstand what they do to him. Asuka outright punches a crack into reinforced glass when she sees him. All projection of his self hatred? Misato ignoring him and then not even referring to name by him? They put him at the center of everything by putting the choker on him: He is the possible trigger, important enough to kill him if he as much as flinches. He IS at the center of everything; NERVs plans clearly revolve around him awakening Unit 13. Nerv views him as important enough to send two Evas to space to recover him.

Unless you are saying that every word spoken and action taking is shown from Shinjis paranoid point of view (i.e, Misato isn't actually coldly ignoring him on the bridge, Asuka didn't say "Just let me kill you already" but "Please, come and help me!", etc) this theory doesn't hold any water.
