Hiatus Hernia

Sometimes, through an opening in the diaphragm, a part of the stomach pushes up into the chest. The opening is called the hiatus and this condition is known as hiatus hernia. You will have an increased risk of having acid reflux if you have a hiatus hernia. This condition leads to symptoms like:

  • Heartburn
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Bloating
  • Stomach upset
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting

The factors mentioned below can cause hiatus hernia:

  • Having an unusually large hiatus from birth
  • Changes in the diaphragm as age passes
  • Injury to the area
  • Intense and continuous pressure in the muscles surrounding the area

Obese people and those who are older than 50 years have more risk of having hiatus hernia.

Surgery is an effective treatment option for hiatus hernia. The best hernia surgeon in Kolkata often uses laparoscopic procedures for the surgery. In your belly, the surgeon makes small incisions and inserts a laparoscope with a light and a camera through one of the incisions. He/she inserts special surgical instruments through the other incisions. While performing the surgery, the surgeon can have a clear view of the area from the images sent by the laparoscope to a monitor. The benefits of this procedure are less pain, less risk of infection, smaller cuts and faster recovery.
