Battlefield 3 was better and more enjoyable to play than Bad Company 2
The Battlefield series has had its ups and downs, but many fans believe that BFBC2 is the best one. Battlefield 3 is also rated highly, as well as BF1. I love BF1 and BC2, but if I were to pick my favorite of the Battlefield series, it would be BF3.
People love to put Bad Company 2 on a pedestal as the penultimate "recent" Battlefield game, citing the maps, the destructibility, the graphics, the perks, and the fact that it is a great sequel to BC1. As much as I love BC2, BF3 to me is the best of the series.
I feel that BC2 had a lot of annoying little problems that took me out of the play experience. For one thing, the player cannot go prone! Being able to limit exposure while being shot at is a must, and since the player cannot go prone, it makes it easier to get shot!
Second, the maps in BC2 are a little too narrow. That isn't to say that they are bad, but maps like Atacama desert or Arica Harbor don't allow a whole lot of flanking opportunities. Even large maps like Heavy Metal are only at most about 300 yards across! Compare these to maps in BF3 like Kharg Island (my personal favorite) or Caspian border. HUGE maps that are over 1200-1600 yards long by 600-700 yards wide. Plenty of flanking (and long range sniping) opportunities.
BFBC2 also had beautiful, albeit inconsistent graphics. The graphics in places like Valparaiso or Arica Harbor, the textures on the buildings, the lighting and shadows all were gorgeous to look at, even 10 years later. However, the gun animations, soldier animations, muzzle flashes, reloads, explosions, etc all looked really cartoony. The helicopter HUD displays in Bad Company 2 just never did it for me either.
Compare that with BF3, released just one year later, and the graphics have improved immensely. The helicopter HUD displays and targeting displays feel REAL. The explosions are gritty and feel more realistic. The bullet impacts on sand, concrete, as well as the muzzle flashes and rifle reports all sound fantastic. When looking down, you see your players legs on the ground, and you can see the details more clearly of all the gear that the player is carrying. People complained that the destructibility in BF3 was kind of underwhelming when compared to BC2, but I feel that made it better. Walls still get demolished, vehicles still explode, craters still form, its just not as over the top. I prefer the "realism" of BF3 to the enjoyable over the top destructibility in BC2.
BF3 had a greater array of weapons and customizability than BC2. Instead of just a acog scope, you could put on different grips, a suppressor and whatnot. Also, the helicopters in BFBC2 were way overpowered. A lot of you can relate when you join a round in BC2 with all the bases taken, and some asshole is spiralling around in an Apache spawnkilling you just as you start, and it is damn near impossible to kill the enemy in the helicopter!
I also like the more grounded in reality story of BF3. To me, it is the perfect shooter that is a nice middle ground between arcade shooters like Call of Duty, or hyper realistic war simulators like Arma 3. You have things like bullet drop, bipods, vehicle weapons, ability to fly Jets like in a war simulators, but you also can run and gun and blast off ammo and mindlessly toss explosives like in Call of Duty. Now, BC2 had these things as well, but I believe that BF3 fixed all the small issues that came up in BF2.
I am probably going to be flooded with comments about people dissing BF3 for its DLC content or glitches or issues with new mods or servers or things of that nature. Personally (and I know it is different for people who have different consoles or played the game on a computer), I never got into that whole thing. If we are talking about technical issues, than BFBC2 would be the better game for a lot of people. I never experienced any major server issues or technical glitches when playing BF3, so I can't relate to people who did. BFBC2 was more glitch free so technically BF3 would be a worse game in that aspect.
I just have the most enjoyable memories playing BF3! Before that game, I always wanted to play a game with destructibility and with war torn maps in an urban city, and Battlefield 3 was the one that started it for me! I love war and combat movies such as Black Hawk Down or The Kingdom, and playing BF3 reminded me of those films.
I miss games such as BF3 that take place in modern times with modern weapons and in modern wars. I am sick of all the futuristic stuff like advanced warfare, Titanfall, or any recent space opera game (if you like those games, that's totally fine. I just think they are oversaturated). Since the release of Battlefield 1 in 2016, the new trend of shooter war games is going back to wars like WW1 or WW2. I hope that soon, we will get a new battlefield game with the graphics of BF1, but set in modern times like the middle East.
I love BFBC2 and a lot of these criticisms seem kinda small, but for me, BF3 would be the best of the Battlefield series.
