Young-adult high school drama with an NSFW scene that has stuck out in my mind all these years
Hi, first post here, been on a binge trying to find books I read when I was younger.
Anyway, there was a book I read in early high school (around late 2012 - early 2014). It was a young-adult drama novel following several characters in high school. I think the book showed the perspectives of at least two characters, one of which was a strong yet shy person who listened to music often. I also think the book was either set in Baltimore or somewhere in Minnesota. I think another main character was from Minnesota and moved to Baltimore or the author was from either one of those places. I could be entirely wrong on that though.
I do know that one of the main characters is introduced as a new student, though. I also remember that both characters I've already mentioned do befriend each other and would occasionally get McDonald's together.
Now for the NSFW part. This is the one scene I know for sure was in this book and has stuck out in my mind just for how shocking it felt while reading it. The shy buff character hides in a school utility closet in the school gym I believe. I believe he was hiding from jocks that were bullying him? Then a jock (or several jocks, can't exactly recall) forces a smaller, weaker male student into the closet. The jock(s) then proceeded to rape the student with a broomstick and possibly other things. The shy guy is hidden quietly and the jock(s) don't know he is there. I think said shy guy was conflicted about what he saw, knowing it's a terrible thing to have happened but doesn't know what to do. I think the kid who gets raped commits suicide, but I could be completely wrong on that. I also remember the behavior of the person raped raised some concerns amongst some people after it all happened. Either way, the book had enough mature content in it to be labeled "High School Only" in my school's library (our high school had a middle school attached to it as well).
I think the book was released in the late 2000s, around 2009-ish if I had to guess an exact year. It had somewhere between 300 and 400 pages if I recall correctly, and I think the hardback version had a white cover with a buff guy on the front. I first got it from a local library, then saw it again at my high school's library.
If you all could help out with this, I'd appreciate it! Like I said, I've just been going around trying to remember books I read when I was younger.
