How difficult is it to purify water?

I assume that it is easy(ish) and that in the original games the value of water didn’t come from it’s purity but the fact that it was water and the game takes place in the middle of an arid wasteland without fast forms of transportation. I thought about this because of f76 and the water purifiers you can build in that and f4.
