Have to move to near NYC for work but want to live someplace nearby to save as much money as possible

I’m looking to take into consideration income tax, sales tax, exemptions and deductions, really the whole bit. Obviously different states and localities have different rates.

The main office is on Park Avenue but I won’t need to be in the office more than 3 days a week at the start, and then less frequently after I get to know folks.

I still want a decent commute (no more than 1.5 hours each to the office and back) and I’ll be looking at 2 bedroom apartments.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to spend as little as possible while considering the above?
