Wizard

Advice/Help Needed

TLDR; DM is unintentionally nerfing only my character & I’m looking for help or a solution that doesn’t involve leaving the campaign.

Playing a Wizard in 5e for the first time & having a little contention with my DM when it comes to learning new spells or homebrewing my own. Both of us are relatively new to TTRPGs (1.5 years), this is his first time DMing, only 7 sessions in. He’s more creatively minded, doesn’t have a great grasp of the rules. I excel at rules & mechanics, but struggle a bit more with creativity & RP. The idea was I could help point him towards what ability check, contested roll, or saving throw to ask for to keep things moving. That sort of thing.

He’s under the impression that since I get to learn 2 spells for free every level (he’s only ever played Sorcerer across 5 campaigns as a player & is used to getting only 1, being a spontaneous caster), that additional spells should only be granted on pretty rare occasion. I point out that Wizards are prep casters, & that Clerics at this level have 35 spells to choose from, Druids have 45 (not including domain or circle spells), as opposed to my 11. I point out that I have to pay to learn additional spells where they do not. I point out that I’m also the squishiest, that spells are all I have to protect my character. No armor, no wildshape. No dice. I’ve been given 1 spell so far (fog cloud), & he’s indicated that that’s not likely to improve. Not looking to be on par with those other classes in terms of spells known, but a couple per level doesn’t seem like too much to my mind.

I’m constantly looking for them, RPing going through shelves of tomes & scrolls whenever given the chance. I’ve told him I have no expectations, just giving him the opportunity to say ‘you find a spell,’ whenever he deems proper. He’s getting annoyed with me even looking.

When it comes to creating homebrew: I’ve thus far come up with 2 low level spells that I don’t consider to be game breaking in any way (keep in mind, I’m the mechanically minded one, & I’ve run them by a friend that has 20+ years experience with D&D. He agreed, they’re not at all OP), but can’t get either approved. Partially because he thinks they’re OP, partially because he thinks I shouldn’t have so many spells. I’ve decreased durations, increased casting times & spell level, cut features from them to the point where I hardly want them any more, still nothing. ‘Why even have a spell list if you can create an unlimited number of spells whenever you want?’

The DMG is very vague on how the creation process should work, only one section (p.283-284), but I can’t get him to give me guidelines to follow outside of that. I’ve made suggestions, but they’re all turned down because he hasn’t had time to vet them.

In the meantime, he’s given out weapons, armor, & items to all other characters that are way beyond their power curve (eg: greataxe that was granted at level 1- gives a static +2 damage to all attacks at level 1, scaling to a static +21 to all attacks at level 20. Barb is consistently getting 22-25 dpr with low rolls at level 3). He’s admitted as much, that it’s because he didn’t realize how OP the items were due to inexperience. & that’s also part of the reason I can’t have nice things. He’s already given out too many powerful items, he can’t do the same for me.

I’m not asking for OP stuff just because the other players have it. I’m actually putting in an effort to stay w/in bounded accuracy, & am the only one who’s pointed out he might just be creating more work for himself. The others are just happy to have cool stuff. I haven’t made any requests for equipment.

I’m also, as any good wizard should be, skint broke from learning my 1 spell. Which is fine, except when you consider that these other items were all given, not purchased, that the other players still have all their gold.

Again, I don’t think any of this is done with malicious intent. Just misunderstanding how the class operates, inexperience, & a sense that he’s barely treading water. That’s where his frustration comes from too. He has too much on his plate & not enough time. I’ve suggested easing off on the schedule. ‘Let’s go every 2 weeks so you have plenty of prep time.’ He gets excited to tell the story, then flustered when he feels like he hasn’t prepped properly.

How does reddit do it? Does anyone have advice or other resources that might help point us in the right direction? Tell me where I’m off base. This has turned in to a rant, forgive me. Not the intent.

Edit: he did give me one powerful magical item capable of a 1 time level 7 spell. But it would’ve ended my character’s arc & sent me home immediately, so I asked him to edit it down. We retconned that it wouldn’t work until I reached a certain achievement & level. He just didn’t see it when he gave it to me.
