Gaming PC - When/What to upgrade

Hey folks, thanks for reading.

I bought the below PC almost 5 years ago and I am on the market for an upgrade. I bought a new 165hz 1440p monitor and want to be able to play the latest games on high/ultra at minimum 144fps. Not interested in 4k really.

I'm tempted to just upgrade my GPU when the next-gen cards come out in the next ~6 months. However, I'm not sure how much of a bottleneck the rest of my hardware would be.

Current specs:

CPU - i7-6700k @ 4.00GHz

MOBO - Asus Z170-AR

RAM - 16GB 2133 MHz DDR4

GPU - GTX 980 Ti

STORAGE - EVO 860 SSD

What do you think? Would a new top of the line card carry me to 144fps ultra @ 1440p?

Should I wait for these Ampere cards and just upgrade my GPU?

Do I need to upgrade the whole rig?
