Crazy that CPS is not closing all schools. If we go off of OH’s estimates, at least 1% of Chicago’s population has already been infected - that’s almost 30k people. Did I mention that figure doubles every 3-4 days?

Theirs a new conference announcing that this second.

They made the right decision. Better late than never.

They are so stupid. They ban all gatherings larger than 250 and all school assemblies 50 people or larger but the whole school can stay open! Wtf! Thousands in hallways during passing periods!!!!

When faced with two difficult choices people will not choose until they are forced to. By then it is often too late and a lot of damage is done and then they still had to make the difficult choice.

Figure it out people that's your job!!

Part of the reasoning for not closing the schools is because for many of the CPS students, schools are the primary places children get food and other social services. It's tragic.

Mayor Lightfoot covered this question in the press briefing yesterday.

I mean that's a legitimate concern but not choosing is still making a choice. So right now we are making the choice to prioritize this rather than fight an epidemic.

Have the national guard hand out MREs man, whatever it takes just get the kids out of the Petri dish that is school! We have hard choices! I'm sure there is math that tells us which one is better.

Who takes care of all these kids once they are out of school? Throw the under 12s into childcare all together?

Leave them with grandparents?

Hey man I don't have all the answers in just saying you have choices. More dead bodies or more problems with childcare arrangements.

I'm not saying it's an easy choice. It's clearly going to cause problems. But it's a choice that's being made every day because everyone is prioritizing childcare and school lunch over old (and young) people literally suffocating in hospital hallways without any friends or family beside them.

Sometimes you have to make hard choices in life. It's not fair but are you going to do the wrong thing because you don't like your choices? If you give me a better solution that can be implemented within 3 days that would be great.

One could argue the deaths in Illinois haven’t been that bad yet. Forcing students to not go to school and figure out lunch is a more definitive thing.

Granted we shouldn’t live in a society where students rely on school for meals.

Anyway, the choices are not easy ones to make regardless.

I will say again these calls to close schools run directly opposite to what public health experts are suggesting.

Which expert? Top health officials in multiple states would disagree with you.

At least provide an online option, or something.

Sure we can't close the schools 100%, but we can reduce the number of students.

You don't need 100% of the kids there. If even 50% went online it'd make a difference.

K-12 schools that have internet capabilities for classes are using them. But those, too, are very expensive - and the poorest schools will be spending their dollars on meals, not expensive internet-based learning platforms.

Fun thing - it doesn't matter if your elearning class has 10 students or 10,000. It's a lecture. The supporting materials can be distributed by email, or by website and the teachers can prepare it and post it while working from home. If there are some teachers without home internet or a computer (which seems unlikely) then have some of the chrome books from the high schools redistributed.

Government has to provide emergency assistance to these families. This is what taxes need to be used for.

Granted.
