Calling SAR-COV2 / COVID-19 as Wuhan Flu, China Flu, etc. is NOT Racist!

If we were to believe China we'd be calling it the US Soldier Flu
I call it CCP's leaked bio weapon. Is that less racist?
no it's just delusional
Kung flu and case of the woohoo’s are a couple of my preferred terms
I shared this in response in someone demanding me to refer COVID-19 ONLY by its official name as it's racist to call it Wuhan Flu, China Flu and anything else connecting it to China.
Note: Ebola Virus, is named after the Ebola River, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Racist really?
Just seems a weird choice at this point. Most people are calling it coronavirus, so calling it something else (unless you want to use the official name for the sake of accuracy) seems like an intentional move.
The term Wuhan Virus (and the like) has already been very prevalent on Hong Kong Social Media before WHO named as COVID-19, and still is. Although one could say the usage of such name goes down the lines of whether you already despise the Chinese Communist Party or not.
The other issue is the question of censorship, CCP wanting to distance itself from it's role in the virus though the usual claims of racism, and the WHO being unusually giving PRC lenient views.
No. Calling it things like the "Chinese Flu" are not technically racist in itself (though, inaccurate).
However, when those terms are used by the wider public it can and does lead to racism and racist acts by singling out a particular people. Using the name COVID-19 attempts to remove the negative association with a particular people or location.
Just as that person twisted your words to call your action racist, others can take your words to encourage their own racism.
Are either of those things your responsibility? Again, no.
But we can try to not encourage casual racism by minding our own words.
EDIT: Re: Ebola. Viruses, diseases, etc are intentionally no longer being named after people, locations, professions, to sever that connection between disease and people/place.
To add on to this - many asian-Americans are reporting an increase of racist attacks. Fair chance Trumps words recently have only fuelled it
Absolutely. As are people of asian heritage in many other countries and regions.
it'll always be the coronavirus
everyone is calling it that, nobody is saying covid19 or anything else
Or just THE Corona, these days...
