Is modern dance painful when done in high heels?

To explain: I enjoy watching dance videos on YouTube ... but I wince when I see women doing complex moves in high heels. It looks painful and probably messes up their feet. (IMHO - it's also unnecessary. High heels adds nothing to a performance.)

So - am I right? Is dancing in high heels painful?

For the record: I'm talking about modern pop-dance. The kind of stuff you see back-up dancers do in concerts and the like.

Usually the heels are at least somewhat designed for dancing I think. Granted no pair of heels is entirely comfortable

Heels in general are uncomfortable. I once tried to jump in high heels, and I thought I was gonna break my ankle when I landed.

I’d say not so much as painful as it is difficult to dance in heels
