I managed to reduce my visual snow, but I don't know specifically what I did. I have some ideas though.
Obligatory backstory: Around 4 years ago I got a very bad sinus infection. When it ended i was left with tinnitus. It was very bad, i was miserable, doctors were useless, etc. I dont know when my VS came about as it happened so gradually. I just noticed it one day, which was about 2 years ago.
Jumping ahead to 5 months ago I was in a very bad place mentally and withdrew from college. At this time my VS was so bad that when looking up at the night sky i could barely make out the stars. The night sky was a flat ugly staticy mess. There was no depth to it at all.
Jumping ahead once again to one month ago, i had recently started a bunch of lifestyle changes which I will get into in a moment. One night I was just relaxing when I had an idea. I decided to go outside and look at the night sky to see if there was any improvement to 5 months ago. Well I went outside and HOLY FUCK. I could actually see the stars and they had depth to them. I could also see more black than static. The VS was still present but I could actually star gaze and get that feeling of insignificance and existentialism. Who knew you could miss such a feeling.
Now then. The lifestyle changes...I regret to say I started doing a bunch of different things at roughly the same time and I dont know specifically what caused the improvement. So I will just talk about everything I did.
To start I recently discovered the subreddit r/hppd. Now before I get into that I want to mention that I dont only suffer from VS. I have quite a few other vision conditions I will now list.
-palinopsia -photophobia -blue field entoptic phenomenon -poor night vision -seeing the photo negatives of the objects I was just looking at when i close my eyes -seeing bluish ripples sometimes when i close my eyes in the dark -seeing a strobelight effect sometimes when i close my eyes in the dark.
Probably forgot something but you get the gist of it. Anyway back to r/hppd. If you dont know what hppd is I suggest visiting that sub or researching it online. Basically another rare visual condition with very little research on the matter. However people get it after having done hallucinogenic drugs. Now I myself have never done hallucinogens but I found that I have around 80% of the symptoms reported by the people over there. I also found that some also had varying success in reducing their symptoms, by taking certain supplements. After doing some research I decided to give it a shot and got some of what was suggested. Here is the list of what I am currently taking each day.
-Lions Mane(specifically a brand called Oriveda): A note here. If you plan on trying some just know that not all brands are created equal. I HIGHLY suggest doing your own research as it gets complicated on how effective certain brands are from the way it is extracted. Im honestly still kind of confused about the whole thing. I chose Oriveda because it's apparently alcohol extracted which allows the Lions Mane to pass through the blood brain barrier. Again not an expert on the matter so don't quote me. Its also fairly expensive but I personally dont care as I dont want to take chances with my health. It also takes a long time to take effect. I personally began to notice it doing something after 3 weeks when i began to get REALLY intense(but entertaining) dreams. The full effects of Lions Mane are supposed to kick in after 6 months or something. Sorry for the info dump. -A multivitamin called "Mega Men". I specifically bought it for the Magnesium and NAC. -Lutein: Good for the eyes and floaters apparently. I know VS is neurological but cant hurt right? -Omega-3: Also good for the eyes and brain.
Now the next 2 are prescription meds and probably dont do anything but I should still mention them.
-Aderall: I litterally was just diagnosed with ADHD 3 months ago. -Wellbutrin: VS sucks. Need I say more?
That is all for the supplements. Moving on to the next possibility. Looking around online at personal anecdotes it seems poor posture is a suspect in causing VS. Now this is relevant because my posture has always been atrocious. So I made steps to correct it and keep my head up and not slouch.
Now the next thing I did may seem contraversial. It seems a lot of people are divided on whether or not Chiropractic is a sound science or not, but I decided to visit one. My first appointment there the Chiropractor ran some tests and determined my spine structure was not ideal and went to work on me. After my first appointment my whole body was shakey and wobbly. I have been there several times since and never had that reoccur.
The next thing I did is just common sense. I started excersizing. I hired a personal trainer as I had no idea how to begin and started going to the gym. Ive been very diligent about it. Well...until the Corona epidemic hit and the gym closed indefinitley. Its like the universe is trying to make me return to my lazy and slothful ways. Well that aint happening. Since all the schools are closed I've taken to running on the high school track.
Ive also been trying to eat healthier. Keyword here being trying.
Well thats all I can think of right now. If I remember anything else I did, I'll be sure to update this. Im sorry this is so long. I started out wanting it to be short but then I figured the more information the better. I truly hope this helps at least someone. If anyone has any questions Ill be glad to answer.
