COVID-19 Support Roundup

In response to the current global COVID-19 pandemic we have seen an increase in requests to share fundraisers and other promotional content to help those in the book community that have been affected. Here is a place to post book-related responses that normally would run afoul of Rule 3.1 or 3.5 regarding promotional posts or sales links.

If you see a book-related sale, fundraiser, or other book-related coronavirus responses that you want to share with the r/books community, this is the place to share it.

Mods will not be checking the validity of shared fundraisers, so please do your own due diligence before contributing, but we encourage you to report anything that doesn't seem above board. There may be a slight delay in comments being visible as mods will have to manually approve those that include content that is generally against the rules.

Stay safe, and keep reading!

I’m one of the laid off Powell’s workers. Most of us were just permanently let go a couple days ago. You can support both us and the store by ordering through our affiliate link, where 7.5% of what you spend goes to our worker relief fund: https://www.powells.com/?partnerID=35751

Or consider donating directly to the workers here: https://ilwulocal5.com

Two iconic independent bookstores, Powell’s in Portland and The Strand in New York City, have shut their physical locations for the time being. Both are still taking online orders, though, if you need some books for your quarantine and don’t have a local independent bookstore to order from (like me). The Strand is also running a book club for those staying at home called The Stranded Book Club- link here

A lot of horror authors are sharing their work for free or deeply discounted. Publishers as well, I know Deaths Head Press's entire catalog was free on Amazon and Valencourt Books have also set all their audiobooks to free on Amazon and many of their ebooks are discounted. Also, Ian Rob Wright, Adam Cesare, Matt Serafini, Laird Baron, and Bryan Smith have set most of their books to free or 0.99 cents.

Also, Image Comics and Top Cow comics have set all their issue 1's for free.

bookloft.com is the website for the Book Loft of German Village in Columbus, Ohio. Reduced shipping cost right now and tons of books to choose from - 500,000 in store, thousands more available to order. It's local and has been around since the 70s. Please consider helping them stay afloat.

Oooh, I'm in the Younstown area and have been dying to go there. They will definitely be my choice when ordering books online.

First of all, if you have a favorite local bookseller, shop directly with them. See if they are offering curbside pickup or are shipping. Buying from them is the best way to help keep them open after this pandemic wanes.

If that isn't an option, here are my favorite options:

Bookshop.org is an amazing new alternative to Amazon for buying new books. A portion of every sale goes to a fund that will be distributed directly to the indie bookshops who list on the site. Currently only in the USA but planning on growing.

Biblio.com (biblio.co.uk) is a site for used, rare, and out of print books. Not quite as cheap as Amazon but is a small indie company and they have over 5k sellers from around the world. Everything from cheap paperbacks up to million-dollar books.

Hi everyone here on r/books! My family and I own and operate Magus Books in Seattle, which is the largest used bookstore in the area and has been operating since 1978. Magus Books has been hit pretty hard by the COVID-19 outbreak and has shut its doors to in person sales. However, we are continuing to fulfill online orders daily! If there is a book (or books) that you've always wanted you can shoot us an email or call us directly and ask! Not all of our books are online, but about 10,000 are listed on Amazon and other websites.

Email us at [email protected] or call 206-291-2558.

Our Instagram, our Facebook, and our website: https://www.magusbooksseattle.com/

Thank you all for supporting independent bookstores now and always,

-Magus Books, Seattle

If you're looking for a sustainable way of maintaining your reading habit, but can't access your local library, might I suggest sites such as abebooks and worldofbooks?

Hey guys! I launched Mystery Book - https://mysterybooks.co/ - to help support the bookstore community. If you are fortunate enough, please support bookstores, and buy a bundle of either 3 books for $50 or 6 books for $100 in your favorite genre!

Hopefully we're able to help out a few bookstores get through these hard times. If you know of any local bookstores who struggling, please let us know! We are looking for bookstores to join our platform and fulfill orders. Let me know if you have any feedback!

BookStock 2020 still has a few hours of life left, I'm sorry I didn't share this info earlier. BookStock 2020 is an online telethon to raise money for independent bookstores and musicians. The event has been going on since Friday evening and independent musicians from all around the world have been performing and promoting their favorite hometown bookstores and viewers have been donating money that will be divided up equally among all of the musicians and bookstores - it's a wonderful cause! Please jump over to https://www.bookstockcoop.com/ and enjoy the entertainment. Small independent bookstores have been hit incredibly hard these past few months, many will never reopen without extra help like BookStock 2020 - thank you!
