Questions about live streaming through a VPS
Hello folks, I am the de facto tech guy for a small church, and we have been live streaming our services on YouTube for some months now. It works alright, but for several reasons I would prefer we host our own stream, rather than using a third party.
We host our website through ionos (no problems, it's been smooth for years) and they recommended a VPS. For a package from with full root access, 2gb ram, and 80gb ssd (I'm assuming that's the physical harddrive we'd be using as our dedicated host) it's pretty affordable.
My thinking is we stream the video to this vps and I can plug a player into our site pretty much no problem.
Because I am woefully uneducated, and Google has only turned up approximately a million third-party hosting companies, my questions are: Is this practical? Should I abandon the idea of leaving YouTube or Facebook or another well-known company?
Are the specs (2gigs ram, 80gigs ssd) for that plan enough to support a 90-minute HD stream twice a week? (Again, I know so little about this, I'm sorry if these are awful questions)
And perhaps most importantly, what would I have to install/modify in the back end of the VPS in order to be able to receive a video feed from OBS?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for your time!
