I used to think that our brains had touched 

/

during an acid trip one muggy dawn in early June 

as the sun peeked out from behind the pines

in the forest out back

/

you grabbed my hand and our bodies tumbled backwards 

to be caressed by the earth 

fingers intertwined, laughing 

/

and we laughed as we walked in through the dawn

to the only place open 

where the waitress knew my order

/

you slipped an AA card into my purse while I wasn't looking

like it was a joke

and you led me back home

/

and you plucked the marlboro from my mouth as we fell to the bed

you took a drag

and ripped the clothes from my body 

/

you held me as the sun turned muggy into sweltering 

you told me you loved me

and you left me for good this time.
