The Silent Sisters (Spoilers Extended)

EXTENDED

One somewhat mysterious and interesting facet of the Faith is the order of the Silent Sisters.

Ned turned to the woman beside the cart, shrouded in grey, face hidden but for her eyes. The silent sisters prepared men for the grave, and it was ill fortune to look on the face of death. "Send his armor home to the Vale. The mother will want to have it." -AGOT, Eddard VII

Thoughts, Theorization and Discussion with regards to the Silent Sisters

With what we know about the silent sisters I wanted to discuss a couple theories wrt them (which I'm sure have been discussed before):

#Rohanne Tarbeck and Cyrelle Tarbeck

If you need a refresher on why their names would anger Tywin go ahead and read: Gerold "The Golden" Lannister, but those names allude to possible murders that Tywin's grandfather was involved in. Later on the Tarbeck rebellion is well known.

But according to semi-canon sources have Tywin forcing Rohanne and Cyrelle to join the silent sisters after the rebellion.

They were born in 240 and 241 AC (putting them at around 60 years of age in the current story).

So let's say they are alive and members of the Silent Sisters that could mean at least a couple things:

1)They were possibly responsible for Tywin's corpse stinking

"Do not presume to speak to me of fitness. Not after the stinking mockery you made of my lord father's corpse."

"Your Grace cannot think . . ." He raised a spotted hand, as if to ward off a blow. "The silent sisters removed Lord Tywin's bowels and organs, drained his blood . . . every care was taken . . . his body was stuffed with salts and fragrant herbs . . ."

"Oh, spare me the disgusting details. I smelled the results of your care. Lord Qyburn's healing arts saved my brother's life, and I do not doubt that he will serve the king more ably than that simpering eunuch. My lord, you know your fellow councillors?" -AFFC, Cersei IV

There are also six silent sisters (say that three times fast) who accompany Tywin's corpse back to Casterly Rock:

Lord Tywin Lannister had entered the city on a stallion, his enameled crimson armor polished and gleaming, bright with gems and goldwork. He left it in a tall wagon draped with crimson banners, with six silent sisters riding attendance on his bones. -AFFC, Jaime II

or even:

2)There are two silent sisters that shave Cersei

The elder of the two silent sisters took up the shears. A practiced barber, no doubt; her order often cleaned the corpses of the noble slain before returning them to their kin, and trimming beards and cutting hair was part of that. The woman bared the queen's head first. Cersei sat as still as a stone statue as the shears clicked. Drifts of golden hair fell to the floor. She had not been allowed to tend it properly penned up in this cell, but even unwashed and tangled it shone where the sun touched it. My crown, the queen thought. They took the other crown away from me, and now they are stealing this one as well. When her locks and curls were piled up around her feet, one of the novices soaped her head and the silent sister scraped away the stubble with a razor. -ADWD, Cersei II

So it is possible that there are at least two anti Lannister silent sisters involved in one or more of the above.

#Lady Stoneheart

Lady Stoneheart is often referred to as "The Silent Sister", etc. for obvious reasons.

One thing that stood out (at least to me) about one of the Silent Sisters' duties is that they:

Perhaps you might wed Moon Boy, Cersei almost said. He is nigh as big a fool as your late husband. She could not risk a war on the very doorstep of King's Landing, not now. "The silent sisters are always glad to welcome widows," she said. "Theirs is a serene life, a life of prayer and contemplation and good works. They bring solace to the living and peace to the dead." And they do not talk. She could not have the woman running about the Seven Kingdoms spreading dangerous tales. -AFFC, Cersei VII

So who knows but in some way they could be involved in LSH death/peace/etc. in the fact that:

  • There could be some Silent Sisters at Greywater Watch (Ned's bones)

  • Some Silent Sisters witness Brienne out searching for her "sister"/Sansa and maybe could vouch for Brienne with LSH (pretty weak imo, as idk why this would change anything

  • BwB is attempting to enter Riverrun for the Red Wedding 2.0. Tom is already inside. We have seen the northmen use a similar ruse to take Harrenhal

#New Member?

One last quick thought.. Does anyone think its possible that a major/semi-major joins the Silent Sisters?

It was often used as a punishment in history and we have seen characters threaten to send someone off to the Silent Sisters (The Hound/Arya and Manderly/Wylla).

The Silent Sisters are also always welcome to widows.

Slow day working from home, so I decided to share some thoughts on the Silent Sisters. Just trying to keep an open mind on how disguising as Silent Sisters in different areas could help entrance into castles such as Casterly Rock and Riverrun, etc. and how they could fit into different theories.

I didn't want to make it its own section since I don't think its true, but I feel like its an injustice to the foilers if I don't at least mention it: Jaime's dream of his mother as a Silent Sister. In the Tyrion Targaryen theory, it is often postulated that Joanna didn't die after birthing Tyrion but was made to join the Silent Sisters.

TLDR: Just some thoughts, possible theories on the Silent Sisters.
