Looking to wire up my laptop to my 165hz monitor and want the highest refresh rate

I have a displayport cable, but not the port for it on my laptop. Would I be getting higher refresh rates if I were to connect HDMI to my laptop and monitor, or buy an HDMI to Displayport cable?
