Does the original expanse forum RP thread still exist?

Season 1

Hey guys. I’ve read that the Expanse setting began as an RPG, one the authors got going, basically on a forum thread where the game was run for a long time, one which influenced a lot of the future story. Like the characters, the general pacing of the first few arcs, the sudden death of Sheds due to his player leaving etc.

Does anyone have more information? Was this thread ever public? Has anyone read the thread or able to give a link to it? I think it would be really cool to get that insight into the genesis of the franchise.

Here’s one of the places I saw that come up https://www.google.ie/amp/s/io9.gizmodo.com/james-s-a-coreys-expanse-series-began-as-a-role-playin-1707214953/amp but it’s far from the only source saying this

Maybe it's a misunderstanding of the author, it isn't a leap to say MMOs to RPGs.

But the author mentions that it wasn't ever meant to be an MMO, whereas in the interview they specifically mention that is where it began.

Id love to learn more though. And for sure the books could easily be brought into pen and paper rpg.

It was for a Chinese company that wanted an MMORPG the likes of WoW. Ty started creating it, then at some point the company realized that making an MMORPG is hella expensive, so they pulled the plug.

That's literally what they said in the video I linked and have watched :)

I don’t think what the author says excludes the fact that it was originally conceived as an MMO. The quote in that article cuts off an earlier part about the MMO origins. In the quoted section they only say it didn’t become one, not that it was never meant to be. I’ve seen several sources being quite explicit that it ended up as a pen and paper style RPG being run online by text. The MMO wasnt getting off the ground, so Franck got the RP going, a few people came and went, Abraham got involved by showing up late and starting to write the character of Miller, doing his own thing. Is this not right?

I’m new to the fandom, binged the whole show recently and looking to borrow the books off a friend, but in the meantime trying to learn any background I can. I have this idea that reading through the original RP could be really interesting.

It really would be interesting. I'd be curious to see it too.

I noticed that the date of the article was in 2015! So is this a Reprint of the Expanse RPG or a different variation of that RPG...

I found this book today on Amazon that explains the game as a traditional RPG. I’m not sure if it the same one or something created by another.

I’m pretty sure they made and released the official game after s3 was was already out, at least after season 2. An expression of the original intent of the setting, but not the origin of it.

I think the author responded a while ago in one of these reddit threads saying that the original thread still existed, but was private and he didn't feel comfortable sharing it without the approval of the players. If you search through Franck's user profile here you should be able to find a few posts where he talks a bit about it.

The forum game may have been accessible at some point. It is not anymore.

The original forum RPG (which was a modified d20 Modern/Future campaign with all the world building) took place after the MMO stuff fell through. I don't know that any of the players ever knew about the MMO when the game was started.

The game covered at most 2/3rds of Leviathan Wakes, with significant differences. Some character names made it over, and even a couple of the personalities made it. Most characters did not make it over.

There are a few comments by Tom Davidson on an avclub thread a year or two ago, confirmed by Daniel, to this effect.
