I'm not a farmer, but are sheep usually that buff? That fucking thing looks like he's just come back from the gym. Swole.
I wondered if this was some kind of cow. lol
They're beltex sheep, used for meat so they're bred that big
wow I have never seen a Baltex, least the ones in this video look mostly like normal sheep, the rest of the breed I've been googling, its like they said eh lets make em look halfway like a dog and a sheep and it got the ass side of both.
They aren't pretty sheep tbf. I used to help on a farm in my teens and they had mostly beltex, I preferred the few zwartbles that they had.
I wonder what kind of character they have they look pretty tough
They’re probably rams.

I'm sure many of these commands are unique to the owner and dog but does anyone know what is generally taught to the dog? Are the "Right Side" and "Left Side". Or something simpler like "Go" and "Back"? How complex can these commands get and the dog still understand? I know these particular dogs can be extremely coordinated, smart, and obedient.
(tldr: Didn't mean for this to be so long. Yet another thing to blame on Corona. Although there will be some differences in the command words used, most working dogs are trained using specific commands. By = go to the right, away = left, for example.)
They can also be extremely stubborn. We adopted a Border Collie only thinking about trail running, and not understanding there are tests legitimate breeders should be doing at certain stages of development, in order to match the temperament with the task.
We took ours to a trainer who worked solely with BCs (trained them for work & competition), and that's where we found out our dog should never have been sold to a non-working (farm/ranch) house. Dogs are ranked 1-10 for their working abilities apparently, and she told us BCs never rank below 7, and that an 8 is the highest she'd recommend for a regular home.
Our dog ended up being a 10, and higher than that on the stubbornness scale. She said he was the second most stubborn BC she'd worked with in her 25 years of training. In two weeks she taught him half of the 20 (?) commands she normally taught, told us he basically said "naw" about wanting to learn more.
She also wanted to buy him, he was that smart. If our kids hadn't already become so attached, we would've done it. He was clearly in his element on that ranch. Although we've felt guilty in that we were clueless BC purchasers, he's done literally thousands of miles on the trails with us, so at least he's physically active. Drops to the ground the minute another runner/horse/car is heard (so he doesn't make them wonder what he's going to do). He's very well-behaved with down-stay-away-come, etc. Horrible with drop-it (tennis balls he loves to fetch but he wants you to fight him to get it back, which is why we have about a 100 of them all over the yard). He's been an amazing family member and hilarious guard dog (not so hilarious for the FedEx guys though). He's going on 13 now, and still kicks our asses out there.
I would definitely get another BC, but would ask more questions before getting emotionally involved.

NO TAKE ONLY THROW
Have you read ' A dog year' by Jon Katz? Great story about an owner of two golden retrievers and than got the same kind of border collie as yours. Very well written and a must read for any potential BC owner.
I have not! I'll go get it on my Fire. Thx for the rec.
Edit: just read the description. Sounds familiar, lol. Thx again!
Jon Katz has written several books on border Collies. And most of them are very good reads... Prepare yourself if you read a Dogs Year, not the happiest of stories at times..
Have you done agility or scent work with him. It may stimulate some of his work desire in a different way than pure trail running but still be active.
Do skunks count as scent work? Jk. Both are great suggestions, but no we haven't.
We don't have skunks in Australia so not sure. But pretty sure I would not want my dog anywhere near the rear end of a skunk. Lol.

When I was in Scotland they said used "hook" and "gee" because from a distance the dog might only hear righ"t" and lef"t".
"come by" and "away to me" are the 2 general terms regarding direction. Come by is clockwise around the sheep... " That'll do" " stand" and "walkup" are some other basics..
I remember watching this video a while ago showing off the herding commands. Pretty entertaining.

That sheep has alot of muscle though, its be scared
It's freaking jacked
I’m not impressed in the slightest. Dumb ass dog didn’t even close the gate!
Dumb ass guy, there was no gate. Lol
It's that border collie stare that intimidates them. It works pretty well on geese as well lol.
Source: my own border collie who scares the geese that terrorize locals
Nothing works on geese
Source; American north east resident. Been dealing with canadian geese all my life. Fuck those fuckers. They shit EVERYWHERE when theyre docile. And then for 2 months out of the year they are satans spawn to anyone that comes close to their egg or tennis ball looking kids.
You need a border collie, my friend. The geese in the park near my house recognize my dog and take off when they spot him. The geese that rule my uni campus are notorious for attacking students and even animals like turkey and dogs, but when my dog approaches them with his border collie posture and stare, they flee in terror. Also, fuck geese. They are truly satan's spawn.
Get. The fck. In the pen
The goodest boi 😭😭😭
