The Premier said he wanted to send a strong message to cruise ships in waters around the world that Fremantle was not a "safe haven" and they would not be welcome in WA. "I don't want us to be seen as a soft touch. It's not our role to take in any cruise ship that might feel like they'd have to come here," he said.

honestly how hard it is to allow them to stay and help any critical patients over the next 2 weeks and then send them on their way? what kind of people are we that we would consider sending potentially sick people away on a slow ship and hope no one dies?

I agree but we also don’t have the resources to care for the 8000 people floating off our coast AND the thousands that will need hospitalization from our own shores. If the government were to refuse medical care to the currently severely unwell, that sounds like a human rights issue, but if they open our borders to them and thousands of Australians die because the cruise ship staff are taking hospital beds, then the government won’t have cared for their own people. And they have an obligation to do so.

"A lot of them are from the Philippines and there's quite a few from Indonesia, so we are working through with the ship's owners and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to see if we can get any of those people off the ship and home."

Mr Outram said although it was a German ship, many of the crew were from south Asian nations.

"They hail from all over, 294 of them are from the Philippines and 63 are from Indonesia," he said.

How long to cruise to Indonesia from Fremantle?

They can go to Philippines afterwards.
