Turn 4 Attack with a 5/4 with flying and lifelink? Casual will be fun.

And then you get two for oned by a removal spell.
I'm SO looking forward to this...granted, we've only seen like 10 cards and I expect there will be benefits to using Mutate, but I'm going to enjoy all the 2 and 3-for-1s hehe.
Feather The Redeemed, I'm telling you all =D
That's not true, the creature you're casting for its Mutate cost still enters the battlefield if its target is no longer valid.
"But here's something you may not expect: if a mutating creature spell tries to resolve but can't because its target is illegal or has gone missing, the mutating creature spell will simply resolve and enter the battlefield. "

I believe you can just remove it after the mutate has resolved, then the creature dies.
Correct, but if it resolves active player has priority again so you'll have to wait for priority so they might still be able to get something out of it
Probably why most of the abilities trigger on the "etb" as it were.
untill everyone is running green for the hexproof mana elf that i cant remember the name
Hoping there's an artifact or enchantment that returns cards underneath something to the battlefield. Mutate could turn out to be bad otherwise. Adventure got lucky clover, which pushed it into being standard playable mechanic, so hopefully they continue that pattern.
Getting 5 damage to an opponent's face or killing a blocker + 5 life + the trigger when it mutates? To than trade with a kill spell?
I think that's enough value to be worth it, principally in casual.
Instant speed removal
You mean dies to [[Doom Blade]]? You can still play around that. And even them, it's a 5/4 with flying, reach, lifelink, "haste" with "when ~~~ enters the battlefield, sacrifice a creature" plus the mutate trigger.
It isn't great for constructed, but it's fun in casual.

^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
You're bad.
It's casual, I'm allowed to.
I feel like Paradise Druid might get a bit annoying when this set comes out...
None of them give vigilance...yet.
you can still splash white. or put hexproof or vigilance counter if they are added
Oh, for sure. Was just joking a bit :)
WAR Ajani
Don't forget it also gets reach.
Actually relevant vs [[Archetype of Imagination]].

[[Healer's Hawk]]
[[Cloudpiercer]]

Looks like [[Exalted Angel]] is back in the menu!

Someone already posted it.
This is more versatile and powerful, but does cost more cards. Still fun.
...You all understand that the power and toughness is decided by the top creature right? So if you want to make your flying, lifelink, reach abomination and attack on the same turn it will still be a 1/1?
If you want it to be a 5/4 the dino needs to be on top and it doesn't have haste, so it can't attack.
It wouldn't have summoning sickness since it's the same creature. It's like if I put an aura on the hawk that gave it +4/+3 and the other rules text.
Not at all. Mutate puts the card on above or below the target creature. The top creature then becomes the "base" with the abilities of each card below it.
So when you mutate here, you either give the bird reach and loot a card, or you give the dinosaur lifelink and flying and loot a card. If you put the dinosaur on top, it just entered the battlefield so it has summoning sickness and cannot attack.
The resolving mutating creature spell doesn't enter the battlefield. It simply makes the creature that was already on the battlefield change characteristics. If that original creature was tapped, the new merged creature is tapped. If it had any counters on it, or Auras or Equipment attached to it, it still does. And it's still presumably a non-Human creature you own, so you can cast another creature spell with mutate and have a third card join the pile. Same rules apply: the new card goes on top or on the bottom and will change the creature's characteristics accordingly. Why would you want to mutate over and over again onto the same creature?
From this article: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/ikoria-lair-behemoths-mechanics-2020-04-02
Which implies that it's the same creature, it just has modified characteristics. You're not creating a new creature.
Yes, if you put the mutating creature on the bottom like I said. In the example above, that would make a 1/1 flying, lifelink, reach.
Mutate is not exactly like Bestow, there is no addition of power and toughness.

You can.

Is this even working? I think it would only get the only effect and reach
You put the dino on top and it becomes a 5/4 reach flying lifelink

It does work. The same thing can be used to have "multiple legends with the same name on the battlefield".
you mean pauper?
No, casual. As in kitchen table.
Hum... Doesn't it make a 1/1 flying + lifelink + reach + whenever this creature blablabla... ?
When you mutate, it gets the abilities, but not the power/toughness
You can mutate the creature on top or bellow.
You described what happens in the second case. I described the first.
Ooooh didn't know you could choose what goes above. Really awesome mechanics, curious to see it in action! Thks for the answer
But then it has summoning sickness so it can’t attack that turn at least
Edit: mutate is bonkers I love it
You can. Summoning sickness doesn't apply to mutate.
I stand corrected: https://www.google.com/amp/s/markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/614303051952553984/if-you-cast-a-creature-for-its-mutate-cost-and/amp
That’s absurd
It doesn't have summoning sickness.
It's not a new creature
you pick what stays on top tho
Won't have haste.
when the creature is mutated it doesn't have summoning sickness so it can attack as though it had haste
Doesn't need haste. As long as the Hawk started their turn under their control, it can attack, even if it mutates.
Welp, my bad. Couldn't read the articles because at work, I assumed if you put the creature casted with Mutate on top it was considered as having entered the battlefield that turn.
That’s not even overpowered for casual
It is fun though.

No, it’s not
monoW heroic can swing with a 9/9 flying lifelink protection from color of your choice on turn 3
if you drop protection it could be a 13/13 flying lifelink first strike on turn 3 aswell
