They aren't limiting the supply per sa, they are just doing quality control. Only high quality products can be exported now.
Which in my opinion should be applied to all chinese exports
not exactly high quality, but have foreign certification. foreign certification =/= high quality
No it's actually the opposite. As OP stated in his comment the export controls now mandate that they need chinese state certification not foreign certification
I 100% support this measure. One, it does explicitly limit exports on items that could save lives. Two, it protects Chinese manufacturer getting screwed by foreign by using the items first, then refuse to pay due to it not match foreign standards. Three, it alleviate domestic supplies of masks, as even now masks are awarded by either lottery or first come first serve.

Explanation:
I know a lot of people believe we shouldn't limit export. But they leave us no choice.
Denmark, Czech Republic and the Philippines bought some test kits and claimed they were defective. Worldwide media report, another Anti-China circlejerk. Turns out they didn't follow the manufacturer's instructions. Some of them admitted later the kits were working fine. But no followup report on the correction though.
Netherlands bought KN95 masks knowing full well it is not intended for medical use. Then they claimed these masks are not up to medical standard and returned them. Again the usual circlejerk.
We have countries buying Chinese supplies in bulk and at the same time claim China's generosity is manipulation and guilty conscience.
Well no more. Ministry of Commerce revised export rules on medical supplies. Before April 1st, suppliers only need to meet CE or FDA standard to export. Now they must also meet Chinese standard. This is not a problem for the big players well established in this market. For the vast majority of suppliers though, this means they can no longer export medical supplies (ventilator, gown, surgical mask, N95, thermometer) starting April 1st. Getting a product certified usually takes months to years. The government now controls who gets to export what and when.
This is great because:
It discourages small suppliers from attempting to make a quick buck.
It forces other countries to recognize Chinese standard. If not they can get the supplies elsewhere. Good luck outbidding each other.
It stops export of medical supplies without packaging. With no packaging, other countries could resell it at a marked up price by claiming these were not made in China. No more.
Like some people here have predicted. China tried to help the world but the effort is not being appreciated. These countries take the supplies and propogate sinophobia and racism. It is not going to get better. I can guarantee some of them will sue Chinese medical suppliers when this is over. Just like US did after China supplied them with drywall after Hurricane Katrina.
Why do these countries do this? Because they are not desperate enough. There is still not enough death in their country for them to take this seriously. So they are playing games. When you save someone, don't save them too early or too late. Wait until they need it the most. China is going to do just that. We can wait. We just lose a little money, they lose people.
What angers me is that every time China does anything, it is spin negatively by Western media. Literally anything. It’s like the West is dying to make an enemy out of China whether China wants to be one or not.
Yep. If China takes strong measures to stop the virus they’re “authoritarian” and “abusing human rights”. If they took a more lax approach they’d be “incompetent” and “allowing the disease to spread, causing human suffering”
There’s literally nothing they could do without being perceived negatively
This has been true since 1949.
The same for the USSR. Did you know that the USSR tried to join NATO?! The Soviets never wanted a Cold War with the West, but the US forced it on them to justify its own permanent war economy. The entire Cold War was just a publicity scam to help the military industrial complex make wartime profits without an actual war.
Yet the USSR played right along with it. One of the reasons for the collapse of the USSR was their crippling tit for tat showmanship over who has the largest military. That was one of the lessons the CCP learned from the collapse of the USSR
The USSR was spending more resources on a single Typhoon-class SSBN than the entire education budget. The US baited the Soviets into a contest they couldn't win. The USSR's GDP never exceeded 50% the size of the USA's. USA's military spending peaked at 10% of GDP while the USSR had to spend about 25%. The USSR also neglected certain fields of science for a while - first genetics (Lysenkoism) and then cybernetics ("bourgeois pseudoscience") creating problems in agriculture and then leaving the USSR out of the information technology revolution.
This trend will continue post-COVID as trump or whoever is next push for a adversarial approach in dealing with China.
There's a possibility that if the USA finds itself in dire straits economically, they will find no other option but to make nice with China again.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't..

They honestly should have done this from the beginning, and I honestly think all chinese exports should be held to these standards.
Keep all the low quality manufacturers domestic and only allow high quality manufacturers to export any goods made in China.
Quality over quantity
I'm sufficiently jaded and sufficiently convinced that the west is beyond redemption that i approve of this method.
thanks for the explanation
Finally! it's about time..

Exactly, it's time China stops being so nice.
