Whats the penalty for going up mount wellington?

Like hypothetically if I was going to run up there. Also how is it policed? Asking for a friend, I definitely wouldn't do this haha

It would be at least the $1600 fine and probably a trespassing charge - criminal record and the shame of being an absolute twat.....

How? Never would this hypothetical runner be anywhere near another person, even in crowded running routes its easy to stay >5m away from anyone else at all times.

How?

Because the law says to stay home unless it's for one of a small number of reasons.

https://www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au/families-community/gatherings

Point 2 does say " undertaking personal exercise ".But seeing as the instruction is to STAY HOME unless it's essential, do you really think that applies to heading up the mountain? Unless you already live on the side of it, then going there for a run means going past many other places you could have run. ie by walking out your front fucking door.

Why is there always some clown going "Ok, but what about this technicality...".The instruction is "STAY IN YOUR FUCKING HOUSE UNLESS YOU HAVE TO".In what way does "Im going to drive to a mountain so I can go for a run" imply essential?

This is a pandemic.
It is an extremely virulent and contagious disease that lives for hours, days and weeks outside the body depending on what it lands on.
It's so fucking dangerous that if you spend 30 minutes in a room with an infected person, you're likely to catch it.

Stay home.

Unless you already live on the side of it

Maybe I do :o

"Ok, but what about this technicality..."

Not a technically, contradiction of purpose. Undertaking personal exercise is ok, because it's low risk - as I said, never will you be close enough to another person to spread it. Why would going up the mountain for this personal exercise, where there is ZERO risk of spreading it due to the complete lack of another human being, be worse than going through the currently relatively crowded running tracks, given that exercise is deemed essential?

It is an extremely virulent and contagious disease that lives for hours, days and weeks outside the body depending on what it lands on. It's so fucking dangerous that if you spend 30 minutes in a room with an infected person, you're likely to catch it.

I know, I've been following it since early Jan when the CCP was going on about it not spreading human to human. Let's be rational here.

Undertaking personal exercise is ok

Yep, those words are there.

So are these ones.

Tasmanians should stay at home unless they need to be away from home:

The word NEED is pretty specific.

You are trying to argue some technicality. And it's this shit that's killing people.

where there is ZERO risk

Zero has a specific meaning, it means none. No chance.
Where does your car park when you go up the mountain? Did someone else park there 30 minutes ago? COVID-19 lives in the air for 3 hours as a droplet.
Do YOU have the virus and don't know yet? You can't possibly know that. Maybe you will leave the virus particles in the air.

What if someone parks beside you? Leans down to fix their shoe, coughs on your door handle. What if your window is down at the traffic lights? What if you break down or have an accident?

ZERO chance of catching or spreading it? Stay sealed inside your house and use the supplies you have.
Very very low chance of catching it, stay inside the house and have a trusted friend bring groceries you give a good wipe down and you wash your hands 10x a day.

Your chances of catching or spreading it start to go up as you leave the house.

You're not being rational. You're being egotistical and assuming you are right.
You literally tried to explain away why the mandated health orders shouldn't apply to what YOU want to do.

STAY HOME, unless it is essential.
There are zero ways that you going for a run on the mountain is essential.

Can you let us know when you're going?
Some of us would like to fill in the form.

General rule of thumb - if you have to ask if or how it could be OK, the answer is no.

Now you're arguing all thread about how you as one person are not going to create a problem by going up there. You may be right. But somehow you are completely overlooking the hundreds of thousands of people also covered by these orders that live nearby. Do you really think that if it were legal to go up there that no one would have the same thought?

So you can either frame your question in a way that affects all of these people, or you're essentially saying what you want to do should be prioritised above everyone else.

I fuckin miss the mountain and my heart is breaking. It's only been a fortnight since I've been up there but I used to go multiple times a week. I moved into a one bedroom flat a year ago for the cheap rent and with the knowledge that the beaches and the mountain could be my backyard (I don't have a backyard where I am). Didn't bank on a global pandemic throwing a spanner in the works.

I'm mad because I understand virus spread and infection control as a health worker, and I know I could go up the mountain and not transmit covid or anything to others, or catch it myself.

I think they closed the mountain so that people don't travel and stop at shops on the drive there, eg a family takes a day trip from launny and stops for cafes and loo stops five times in the day and they happen to have covid and 50 other people catch it during that day.

But you can't legally untangle "I travelled 30 mins and didn't stop anywhere on the way" vs "I took my homeschool kids for a trip to Mt Wellington that we've been planning to do for years and found a good opportunity and we stopped for the loo and food five times". So they just did a blanket ban.

Social distancing on the mountain is so much easier than social distancing at the supermarket, so I'm mad and sad and have increased my antidepressants and have a referral to a psychiatrist because I can't go and do shit or see people. And it sucks so much. I don't even have an abusive partner, actually my partner is amazing, so I do feel for people in a worse position than me.

Do what you need to in order to stay sane, but don't make people mad by posting on Reddit and arguing the point. If you're going to break the law (which is designed to save people who are immunocompromised, old etc) then do it without making more people stressed and worried and angry.

If we don't manage covid properly and be reasonable about balancing physical and mental health, we'll have a suicide pandemic emerging soon. Go for a run, but if you can refrain from breaking the law, prob best, if not for any reason but to save yourself some money.

Is Mt Wellington not considered part of a park or reserve and there for shut under all the rules that are in place anyways?

I think you know it’s a stupid thing to do and if police did spot you doing it you’d be questioned and most likely charged - they’re not gonna give a fuck about your little “but but technically” argument because you’re wrong 🤷🏼‍♂️

MinimumtypOP•

Don't really care, just mulling up the risks and trying to be aware of the consequences. Not a "technicality" arguement.

You are allowed to go for a run despite the scaremongering. But the park is closed, so that is where you would get in trouble if caught. Depending on the trail, your very unlikely to get caught but it's a much smarter idea to find a trail somewhere else that is not part of a closed area.

Dunno why people are so aggressive and irrational about telling people to "stay at home". The point is not to be close to people. The gov has put in some blanket laws (since they aren't going to make very specific laws addressing every possible activity). Staying at home is a pretty good directive to issue to 24 million people.

But fuck me, what are the chances of infecting someone while hiking alone in the bush?

3
FireLucid•

Exactly. I went on a 30 minute bush walk yesterday and met only one other group of people. Track was wide enough to pass with a bit of distance, was just sure to warn them about the snake I almost stepped on!

Mountain is shut at bracken lane, roadworks are happening again on the 20th, plus they are doing trail work while it's shut, there is council Rangers patrolling over easter.
