What is with the Witches/Priests and One Eyed Men? (Spoilers Extended)

EXTENDED

Here is something somewhat stupid and random that I've never noticed before:

Characters involved in magic love using One Eyed Men

Alys Rivers and Aemond "One-Eye" Targaryen

Aemond lost his eye while obtaining Vhagar via Lucerys Velaryon/Strong

Yesterday I posted about Alys Rivers aka the Witch Queen of Harrenhal which is where I put this small connection together.

Who told you where to find me?

My lady. She saw you in a storm cloud, in a mountain pool at dusk, in the fire we lit to cook our suppers. She sees much and more, my Alys. -Fire and Blood, The Dying of the Dragons: Rhaenyra Triumphant

Shiera Seastar and Bloodraven

Bloodraven lost his eye in a duel with with his half-brother Aegor "Bittersteel" Rivers.

While Shiera really enjoyed teasing Bloodraven (who was in love with her) they were at least paramours and magic practitioners together:

That was insolent, but true. "Might be I don't know any highborn ladies, but I know a boy who's asking for a good clout in the ear." Dunk rubbed the back of his neck. A day in chainmail always left it hard as wood. "You've known queens and princesses. Did they dance with demons and practice the black arts?"

"Lady Shiera does. Lord Bloodraven's paramour. She bathes in blood to keep her beauty. And once my sister Rhae put a love potion in my drink, so I'd marry her instead of my sister Daella." -The Sworn Sword

Thoros and Beric Dondarion

Beric loses his eye via the Mountain's dirk:

He lifted a finger to the raw red pit of his eye. "Here is where the Mountain thrust his dirk through my visor." -ASOS, Arya VII

Thoros continues to resurrect Beric (for R'hllor's purpose) and its obviously not some type of romantic love, but Thoros feels a duty to Beric:

"Even brave men blind themselves sometimes, when they are afraid to see," Lord Beric said when Lem was gone. "Thoros, how many times have you brought me back now?"

The red priest bowed his head. "It is R'hllor who brings you back, my lord. The Lord of Light. I am only his instrument."

"How many times?" Lord Beric insisted.

"Six," Thoros said reluctantly. "And each time is harder. You have grown reckless, my lord. Is death so very sweet?"

"Sweet? No, my friend. Not sweet." -ASOS, Arya VII

and:

"Can I dwell on what I scarce remember? I held a castle on the Marches once, and there was a woman I was pledged to marry, but I could not find that castle today, nor tell you the color of that woman's hair. Who knighted me, old friend? What were my favorite foods? It all fades. Sometimes I think I was born on the bloody grass in that grove of ash, with the taste of fire in my mouth and a hole in my chest. Are you my mother, Thoros?" -ASOS, Arya VII

Shameless Self Plug: If interested check out this post on Beric's deaths.

Euron Greyjoy and ???

Euron wears an eyepatch over a "black eye shining with malice":

Crowfood. Theon remembered. An old man, huge and powerful, with a ruddy face and a shaggy white beard. He had been seated on a garron, clad in the pelt of a gigantic snow bear, its head his hood. Under it he wore a stained white leather eye patch that reminded Theon of his uncle Euron. He'd wanted to rip it off Umber's face, to make certain that underneath was only an empty socket, not a black eye shining with malice. Instead he had whimpered through his broken teeth and said, "I am — " -TWOW, Theon I

Yet we never find out why he does wear the eye patch. His other eye, his "smiling eye" is as blue as the summer sea:

He looks unchanged, Victarion thought. He looks the same as he did the day he laughed at me and left. Euron was the most comely of Lord Quellon's sons, and three years of exile had not changed that. His hair was still black as a midnight sea, with never a whitecap to be seen, and his face was still smooth and pale beneath his neat dark beard. A** black leather patch covered Euron's left eye, but his right was blue as a summer sky.**

His smiling eye, thought Victarion. "Crow's Eye," he said.

"King Crow's Eye, brother." Euron smiled. His lips looked very dark in the lamplight, bruised and blue. -AFFC, The Iron Captain

Then later in The Forsaken, we get a possible vision of Euron's bride/mate:

The dreams were even worse the second time. He saw the longships of the Ironborn adrift and burning on a boiling blood-red sea. He saw his brother on the Iron Throne again, but Euron was no longer human. He seemed more squid than man, a monster fathered by a kraken of the deep, his face a mass of writhing tentacles. Beside him stood a shadow in woman’s form, long and tall and terrible, her hands alive with pale white fire. Dwarves capered for their amusement, male and female, naked and misshapen, locked in carnal embrace, biting and tearing at each other as Euron and his mate laughed and laughed and laughed … -The Forsaken

And while we know Euron wants to marry Dany:

"So are the contents of my chamber pot. None is fit to sit the Seastone Chair, much less the Iron Throne. No, to make an heir that's worthy of him, I need a different woman. When the kraken weds the dragon, brother, let all the world beware." -AFFC, The Reaver

It seems much more likely that the woman in that vision is some form of witch or priest (such as Melisandre).

Other Cases that are Small/Aren't Direct fits

  • Varamyr's lead wolf is One-Eye

  • One Eyed Crone is the one who announces Rhaego will be the Stallion who Mounts the World

  • Timett the leader of the Burned Men is a Red Hand and feared for putting out his own eye

  • Wulf One-Ear/One-Eye is terrified of Moqorro and his curses

  • Yna One-Eye is a Braavosi prostitute who is also a maegi/fortune teller/user of blood magic

  • Kedge Whiteye's whereabouts are currently unknown

  • Jack-Be-Lucky is a member of the BWB who is quite verbal in his support of Lady Stoneheart (although it is possible he might remember Cat from Riverrun since he was jailed there at some point)

There were numerous characters with one eye who had nothing that fit as well including Bartimus, Mors Umber, etc.)

TLDR: Just a small probably meaningless connection between magical characters and one eyed dudes.
