Seeking a scholar is obviously a right thing to do. However, Allah encourages us muslims to ponder on the Quran. Which we should also obviously do. There are verse which are very clear without a doubt, and some that we don't understand and are open to interpretation. And there is nothing wrong with that, but we should be cautious nevertheless. Because Allah says so:

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah . But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding. (3:7)

For every word in the Quran that has different meanings for whatever reason we should understand that in the end the true interpretation is with Allah and accept it as such. Other interpretations might be biased for whatever suits the interpreter.

Actually a new Muslim should be careful of picking up Sahih Bukhari and learn on his own from it. Study the text with a teacher.

As much as I love Farid he has some very WoKe takes when it comes to certain topics. I remember him essentially saying it is obligatory for everyone to reach the level of a mujtahid

This isn't woke. It's taking things far, if that's what he said. However, knowledge of fiqh and it's usul is incumbent upon every muslim to learn, but some will excel more than others.

Yep knowing at least the basics on every topic definitely helps Alhamdulillah. If nothing else you feel am appreciation and have a workable bs meter.

He said remember. Unless you're not talking about surah qamar. And surah maryam it explains on the prophets tounge ie language. And the reason why we go to scholars is based on the fact that ayat came at different times. And some ayat arent clear. Like one ayah near the end on yunus. Like few ayat after وجاوزنا ببني إسرائيل

Considering I’m becoming a scholar and in the 5th year I can say that it may seem frustrating to People when they are made to go to a scholar but trust me I can write a whole book on Hadith rulings Quran verses which when the layman trys to understand them he can get deeply misguided. It’s always better to consult a scholar who has devoted his life on understanding that same thing you think you understand but you actually don’t. No offence to anyone but this is the way things are.

what is he trying to say here even? Is approaching scholars supposed to be a bad thing or something?

There is nothing wrong in reading on your own. But you need scholars to understand the reference and context. Just because you have read the Quran or Hadith doesn't make you a mufti. You need to go to scholars to understand both.

This is just stupid, many scholars from all the madhabs have said that a non-mujahid shouldn’t be picking up and spreading ahad ʼaḥādīth.
