Can Major Image be used as a party-wide mirror image?
The idea is that you’d create as many duplicates of your party members as possible within a 20x20 space, by my math that’s 16 5x5’ squares. You can at-will manipulate what the image is doing, but it requires an action to move it. The idea is that you’d be able to have individual parts of the illusion threatening monsters inside it, which would make it very hard to attack an actual party member(20% chance of hitting a party member compared to clones)
Obviously, it could be defeated by a successful int check against spell save DC, but as long as the party remained inside of or adjacent to the illusion, not including outside corners they have 32 spaces of ground to stand in and have a drastically reduced chance of properly being hit.
Thoughts?

Mirror image has the advantage that the mirrors automatically copy the target. Major image requires the caster to manipulate the illusion so best case there is lag time between actions, and if the caster isn't in a position to see all of his own party at once...
It doesn't seem to me that it'd be effective as a mirror image option. You could make a crowd, sure, but it'd be nearly impossible in combat to confuse the enemy as to which one is attacking them.
It seems like the manipulation is at-will, sewing as the text states that it can carry on a conversation
A conversation is much different than matching the real time actions of a combatant. With one there is, in fact, small delays and reactions are not supposed to be simultaneous. In the other even a minuscule delay (human reaction speed of .2-.25 seconds) is very noticeable.
I think that if a hammer is being swung at your head you probably aren’t going to notice the minutiae of micro-reactions
