Where are my files/pics/contacts being stored on self hosted Nextcloud instance with Raspberry Pi?

I've managed to set up an instance of Nextcloud on my pi and everything runs perfectly. I decided to be completely self hosted and not use the a cloud service. My question is, are all my files being backed up to the sd card in pi? And if so, does anyone have instructions on how to back up/sync from an external drive?
