Do I need to close my nether portal?

I got minecraft about a month ago messed around in creative till I understood the controls and set off in my first servival world. I just build a nether portal and jumped in to take a look around then I closed it right after to reopen it when I'm ready to take that journey. I was wondering if there was any reason to really close it or should I keep it open.
