Help with Mac Pro 3,1

GPU

I have a Mac Pro 3,1 with 2x quad core Xeons. 6Gb ram. Currently I have a nVidia 8800GT 512mb in it. I have an AMD Radeon 6450 1GB PCIe card that will work in it but only when it gets to the desktop. Is there a way to make it show the white boot screen with Apple Logo?

You'd need to flash an EFI bios to the card, it may or may not be possible.

Any idea where I might look?

Here is a starter.

It looks like your card doesn't have an efi bios available, it may not be possible depending on flash size. Either way, the macrumors forums are a great place to check.

I don’t think it’s possible. You can get to the boot screen but you won’t be able to see it.

Here’s the most comprehensive compatibility list

In a nutshell: the card either needs to be an OEM Apple card or flashed with an Apple firmware to get the boot screen.

Keep your stock card handy in case you ever need to boot into recovery.
