Cautiously excited for this

I mean the hirings seem fine, the rumors we're getting not so much.

Can someone explain why this is significant

baylixirOP•

Brock Aller is joining the FO and has a good reputation around the league.

Writing's on the wall: we're targeting stars through trades and free agent signings, not developing our young guys.

16
dill1234•

Did you miss last free agency? That's been obvious for a while. But what's also been obvious is this current FO isn't going to be making dumb trades (touch wood) by giving up all our assets for one big fish

"Touch wood"

5
dill1234•

Felt that was necessary

maccam21•

That's not inherently a bad thing. It's bad if the team is trading young players for mediocre ones, trading draft assets for space to make mediocre moves, etc. A star focused approach in which the only way we sign a star is on our terms in free agency, and the rest of the time we just sign role players and draft in the lottery is a decent plan.

It's about not giving the Amares of the world massive deals no one else in the league would touch. It's about not trading all our assets for Melo who would have come in free agency. There's a balance to be struck.

That said, I'm 100% sure the knicks will fuck it all up

:( yup. This is the reason Leon Rose was hired. Dolan and whoever is whispering in his ear, still think that signing a superstar is the only path forward

3
Ilovecharli•

Yup. Only reason to bring in Rose, who has zero experience putting together a team or a front office, is his connections to stars.

machinations is my new favorite word. lol, thanks cbs sports.

Guybrush_Bluebeard•

The machinations of my mind are an enigma

You have a way with words Mr bluebird.

Whenever someone says machinations this is the first thing that comes to

Imagine fc'ing after machinations a

😂😂😂

Let's just hope we have luck on our side this off-season and going forward.

5
TOMtheCONSIGLIERE•

Luck? I’d settle for a competent GM who tells Rose, "I’ve got it from here. Please keep Dolan away and let me handle things."

2
TOMtheCONSIGLIERE•

[Sarcasm warning] I love how Rose is filing the FO without getting the most important piece. How can this fail?

3
mark_cny•

Carmelo Anthony?

5
TOMtheCONSIGLIERE•

Huh

1
mark_cny•

Obviously the most important piece. Smh

2
TOMtheCONSIGLIERE•

Yes. He is the most important piece if we’re looking to maintain the status quo as a bottom dweller.

That's very impressive.

1
sf1215•

Could you explain why? I thought that the luxury tax is bad so why is it impressive to pay it?

1
dirtymelverde•

its not impressive to pay it ...it is impressive to finesse the rules in a year you have Cap space to pay it because they wrote the salary cap rules in a way to make that near impossible .

(love, kyrie and Lebron ) they went from 0 to 3 max contracts in a single offseason.

1 by trade , 1 by free agent signing and 1 by retaining a RFA

3
sf1215•

Got it. Normally if you're already paying the luxury tax, there's no way you could sign another max contract player, but they did anyway. Did I get that right?

2
dirtymelverde•

They got cap space enough to sign 1 max deal , I’m not entirely sure how they managed to trade for 1 as well under the rules because it took them pretty far above the cap, and then they re-signed Kyrie and used up their exceptions and wound up in luxury tax territory .

To do it at all required a lot of knowledge and planning and basically turned 1 of the worst teams in the league into one of the best over the summer.

2
mark_cny•

Because yes

1
maccam21•

I was so confused, too.

It's that most teams in the luxury tax zone are unable to sign a max free agent. Making it possible is very impressive.

blkhwk27•

ive seen people say this means we’re going all in again in fa, but the cap is much more than that. manipulation of the cap through bird rights, trade exceptions, etc can be extremely helpful. not to mention it could help us plan salaries for the future. if rj becomes a star, how much could he really carry us if we’re capped out on average-below average players? having a smart guy like aller could really work wonders
