Newer player here, how do you address anxiety playing as a Killer?

Question

So I've played three matches as Killer, two as Pig and one as Huntress, and I wanted to try out Leatherface this morning. I spent about 20 minutes in queue to wind up, as a Rank 20, level 1 Leatherface put up against a TTV player, and could check their stream to see they were in a full group, and the streamer was Rank 4.

I wound up just quietly backing out of the lobby lmao, like I have one perk and I don't even have a way in the game to really play with the buttons and figure out how the character even really plays? I'm not sure what to even begin to do to address the sheer level of anxiety I get when I queue? I honestly feel more confident playing as survivor than I do as Killer in all of my games so far, which I find really ironic

edit: You know what for a subreddit about a game full of serial killers and monsters this place is really supportive and encouraging. Thank you all for the kind words.

For me, exposure therapy was the best way, just play killer and do the best you can to Kill all of the survivors.

Its insulting for a little while when they taunt you, but once you see it 1000 times or so it really starts to lose whatever effectiveness it had.

Plus, once you get to that point you can usually dunk on Survivors anyways, and controll the match the way you want to.

Honestly? Just do it.

If all four survivors escape, teabagging you all the way, so be it. You're learning. Nobody is born adept at this, and those survivors may be mocking you now, but they'd soon be complaining if you, and everyone like you, quit playing as Killer.

It's like Learner Drivers. People honk and overtake etc, but they forget that they were once there too. Learning a new skill is admirable. Mocking people for learning? Dangerous.

Keep at it. Shun the hate. Do your best!!

Thanks for the kind words, I'm gonna give it a shot. Honestly it wouldn't be as bad if the queue times weren't so long even in the evening haha. I got over my BR anxiety in games like Apex and PUBG quickly because I knew I could just requeue quickly. In DBD the wait for matches seems longer than the matches themselves?

As a high rank killer, my queues are about 10 seconds. Think this starts around green ranks or so

My advice? When things start gettong tough, just goof off. Spin around in a circle all match; take several jogs around the map, or even play hide and seek with the crows.

Such random acts of nonsense will do a lot to remind you that at the end of the day it's just a game, and games are supposed to be fun.

I feel the same way basically. I’ve played a couple matches with kill your friends and I still get nervous about doing it. But online the only way I found to really not get anxiety is just going into the match just trying not to care about winning and just get used to controls and how the specific killer plays. I also just think everyone started somewhere, you can’t just not play because you’re anxious. Trust me after you get in those couple matches it’ll feel much better! Also try watching some streamers, they helped me a lot learning each killer and also how to play as a killer in general and what to watch out for. Hopefully that helps a bit!

I'd suggest getting Leatherface (or whatever killer you want to play) to at least level 15 so you have four perk slots open...perks and add-ons really help you, so experiment with those... Killer takes lots of learning and practice, YouTube and/or tutorials will be your best friend

According to the devs, you go play some Civilisation V

Being truly new as killer is worse than being at the high ranks. There's quite a few great survivors that queue with their less skilled friends so they can get easier games, and it's the only time in the game where killer queues are actually long. If you can truck through it for just a little bit longer, you'll start to get to the point where the games are much more fun

Just push through. For now the teabagging and pointing is gonna hurt but as you play more you will become numb to it and as your skills improve eventually the mocking and clicky clicky flashlighting will become a death sentence for survivors and they’ll regret doing it.

You said it yourself your new. If you do bad then thats to be expected. Some people expect way too much early on

Get some pals or at least someone that might know a thing or two about the game, go in to a KYFs game and run around to get a feel for it.

If that isn’t an option watch tutorials on YouTube or just various streamers and Yters. That way you can get a gist of the mechanics.

But if all else fails, just go into a match. You might lose, you might get a single kill, but try not to let it get to you. Ranks busted anyways so if you play against nothing but red ranks, when you DO face lower ranks it might be a breath of fresh air.

In a certain sense, I know what you mean. When I'm waiting for a match as a killer (main) my spine tingles, my hands tremble, my knees shake. All in anticipation of the hunt.

Whether or not I rip out the spines of 4 randoms, or a swf group laughs at me while clicking their lights (an enraging possibility, let me tell you.) The fact is every match is a learning experience.

Learning how to effectively loop as killer is different than learning how to loop as a survivor, and unfortunately it can take having a survivor loop you for all 5 gens to learn, but every lap is a lesson.

Like I said, I'm a killer main. And I've kind of felt an affinity for being the killer since I first picked up the game. Tbh, the best advice I can give you is to try and get into the headspace of a killer.

Instead of thinking "oh no, that Claudette has a key I hope she doesn't find the hatch!" Think "That Claudette has a key, I can't wait to hook her first!"

But that's just my thoughts on it. I've been told I get too INTO it when I play. I snarl when I lunge at a Dwight, growl when someone pallet slams me. And get VERY angry when someone blinds me with a flashlight.

Tldr; Learn to run loops differently than you do as a survivor. Don't worry overmuch about the survivors' items. And instead of thinking "oh gee I hope this is gonna be an easy match," think to yourself "I'm gonna make this a bloody match."

Never had this anxiety when playing killers. Just play survivors for a while instead I guess.
