bittersweet melody
mama, if only you could hear me play
without you on the other end of the seat
every note sounds like a shallow beat
the haunting melody of the notes left unplayed
only the ghost (that smelled like your wine) stayed
.
mama, it's easy, can't we just leave him?
he hurts you, and so there's nothing to grieve, then.
his bursts and screams, shouts and shattering glass
it breaks our melody, wish he left already
the house was less wine (and more like whiskey)
.
mama, i have lost all my hopes
you've carried it all, all of your notes
your hands, your pianos, your songs
you've turned them cold, distant, silent and slim
te echo de monos
(i wish you weren't buried next to him)
.
but whiskey tasted better (bitter) than wine.

I thought that this was overall a very interesting poem. It is almost like a child who is desperate to get back the attention of their mother, who seems to have left them and is spending all of their time with a romantic partner, who in turn is hurting her, but she cannot resist seeing them. The way I saw it, this leads to her metaphorical "death" with the line "I wish you weren't buried next to him."
The use of the word bittersweet in the title raises some questions for me, because I can clearly see the "bitter" part of the poem, but where is the sweet? Maybe it is the relationship between the mother and the child? It also seems like music could either be a hobby/interest that they shared and bonded over, or it could be a metaphor for something greater, like maybe the music symbolizes their relationship? I think it was a good poem, and left a quite a few things open to interpretation, which is always something good in my opinion.
