I (20F) misinformed my girlfriend (20F) about how to lose weight and I want to make it up to her
Hi,
I think I really messed up big time right now. So I've always been active and I don't eat much besides the normal 3 meals a day so I've always been skinny and fit. My girlfriend doesn't really have an active lifestyle, and her body makes her really unhappy sometimes. I'm always supportive of her wanting to change but I love her body and I don't judge her for being a little chubby. She just really hates being chubby and has some self esteem issues when it comes to weight. So in retrospect maybe I should have been much more serious when she decided she wanted to lose weight.
Recently she decided she really wanted to drop some pounds and get into better shape and I was super supportive of her. However, I didn't really research how to lose weight and all of that stuff. So she's been doing exercises and stuff for a while but she started snacking recently and gained some weight she had lost. She had lost her appetite for a while because of some mental turmoil her family put her through, so she dropped snacking and only really ate her meals. She then started snacking again once that cleared up and ended up gaining weight even though she worked out.
She told me she regained weight and it seemed like her mentality got way worse so I looked up some sources to help her lose weight, because if she gained weight, working out wasn't helping. I sent her the links and she messaged me saying she felt like I had lied to her. I do think I'm guilty of this because when she said I had told her to just eat better and workout, I also said losing weight was easy. I feel really bad, and I was proud of her for losing weight, but right now it seems like she's really mad at me. I was planning on sending her a care package but now she doesn't want it and that just makes me worried. Could anyone share their perspective on what I wrote and give me some advice? I can provide any other details needed in the replies if necessary.

I think she’s feeling really defeated because she made a lifestyle change (working out) and she’s getting an undesirable outcome (gaining weight).
she can still snack, but low-calorie foods like apples or whatever, and lose weight.
I would just send her a heartfelt apology (even while this is not your fault and you shouldn’t own any blame), only because she is in a really low place right now. you could just explain you were trying to help and reassure her you love the way she looks and support anything she aims to do.
Yeah.. I just felt really guilty because I definitely remember several times when I had snacked with her or told her dieting didn't seem important in my opinion. So her saying she felt like I had lied to her made sense to me just because I know how much she trusts me, and I definitely shouldn't have just pulled exercise and weight loss stuff out of my ass. This stuff is definitely a lot more finicky now that I've read up on it... thanks for reading and commenting though
Snacking is probably not important for you because you are slim and fit. If you are chubby, snacking is the first thing you need to change. Maybe try snacking banana with a little peanut butter or sweet fruits like strawberrys. Also a healthy breakfast and routine helps a lot to ease into getting more healthy. (Coming from a chubby girl)
A banana and peanut butter could be pretty calorie dense. Isnt PB like 100 kcals per tablespoon?
Delicious, healthy and filling though. Good for you if youre counting the calories. But man, when I was losing weight, I could barely have peanut butter in the house much less snack on it daily

Yeah but I do it to easy into not eating chocolate or something sweet. And I dont use a lot of peanutbutter. Also we have peanut butter that is made of 100% peanuts, little detail haha
What do you mean snacking is not as important to him? 300kcals of snacks is the same in his body as in his girlfriend's body. If he is skinny its actually easier to get in the caloric surplus needed to gain weight.
another one of her issues is that I was doing more workouts without her and that's why when we lived the same lifestyle i didnt really gain weight. I guess in that sense I really did lie to her. Although I did tell her I did more stuff and it'd be smart to work up to a point where she could handle the stuff i did. I do think the solution to this is apologizing, referring her to some calorie counting app and articles and just supporting her from the side instead of acting as some bootleg coach. Advice from me might sting instead of help honestly because it might come off as me wanting her to change. Sorry i rambled thanks for replying
