Why

Whats the point of story arcs if you can't complete them back-to-back? Many of the arcs, as a free player, means you can reach a certain point where it is literally impossible to continue because the enemies are beyond the capability of the gear you have won thus far. You get obliterated and can't progress. You have to then go start a completely different story arc, which creates a jumbled mess of story lines just to be able to get decent gear to then go back and complete the other story arc. What the actual f_ck. Why?

As a totally free to player myself, one that has been at this for years now, I can assure you that is not the case at all. The problem you're likely facing is that with the experience bonus they are currently running you're levelling faster than you're able to replace gear: whereas you could complete a dozen missions before reaching level X (with all that entails, including the dropping / rewarding of better gear), you're now reaching the same level in five or six missions; as a consequence you're now facing stronger enemies, whose difficulty scales with your level and not with your equipment, with weaker equipments.

There is very little you can actually do to counter this particular (and time-limited, since it will end in a couple of weeks) problem but a good way to start is to read the "Prelude to Ten Forward" guide on r/stobuilds and learn how to make the most of your ship and equipment.

ok thank you. that makes sense. I was getting frustrated because i was trying to do the borg advance stories and i got to a point called "assimilation" and i was just getting obliterated by the borg cube at the end. It might not have been so bad if the spawn point wasn't at the start of the map so that by the time you max impulse back to the cube after getting owned, enough time has passed to allow the cube to regenerate to full health >.<

The borg make your shields useless and most people that start off focus on shields and not on hull, also you can buy decent gear from the exchange using energy credits until they can be replaced if you can afford very rare then get those if not then get rare and if not then get uncommon or common, make sure your gear matches your level the best way to find out is at the exchange pick your rank as one of the filters and it will show you what gear you should be using, this works until you can use level xii gear ( level 12) Good luck and remember to have fun, do a patrol or tfo if you get frustrated with missions and don't be afraid of reading walkthroughs or watch videos

Yeah, the Borg are a definite beef gate early on, but learning how to set up your build can settle most problems, and you can always find ways to improve your gear before giving it another go.

This game does a terrible job of teaching new players about the challenges that are designed for experienced players but thrown at everyone. You'll have to research and perhaps ask for advice on how to defeat some of the tougher obstacles (Borg, Vaadwaur, etc.), and most likely your build in general isn't great (also not taught within the game).

Ah this old gem - still AMAZES me that Cryptic gives newbies (and I mean that with no insult intended) that HUGE XP boost... ... ... with no corresponding gear dump or EC bonus!

Meaning that, thanks to the speed you're leveling at, your crew, characters and ship can't keep up - while the NPCs, heh, they don't have that problem :P

The worst part being that you'll HAVE to get a bunch of new gear just to compete with the npcs - which you'll promptly out-level in a matter of hours - and be right the fuck back where you started!

If you've even got enough ec and dil to get what you need.

Setting yourself up with gear that upgrades freely to Mk XII saves a lot of pain. The Sol Defense set can be brutal if you're undergunned, but it's arguably worth the effort. The Bajoran, Solonae, and Quantum Phase sets are also good, with Quantum Phase being the easiest of the 3 missions to complete.

Seems like there are many people who just vote down questions without offering any helpful advice. Thanks to those that did, go f_ck yourself to the lurkers.
