Consumables, equipment, crafting, treasure chests, quests and story cutscenes are disabled when playing as Zangetsu

Given the time it took them I was kind of hoping for new cutscenes and some equipment/quests for Zangetsu. I hope I'm wrong but the announcement makes it sound like a low effort mod.

WildCard0102•

Thats how it was when you could play as the Belmonts in Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow. Not that its a good choice imo but it fits the expectations s.

I agree that it is low effort, I would of loved to see a different story played out for Zangetsu but it'll probably just be a castle run with sword man. No power ups, no reason to explore. Just go to the boss room as quick as you can and bash the attack button

17
webb79•

Dawn of Sorrow had some additional dialogue. I'm hoping for that at least.

Most of the castlevanias didn't do much, but I feel like both Soma's games had some more right? Like the heart of fire theme played when you started as Julius! So awesome!

9
thedarkfreak•

I'm honestly expecting something similar with Zangetsu. Actually, I'm expecting that it branches off of the "bad" ending, similar to Soma's games, and that a possessed Miriam is one of the final bosses.

It would even make sense; in the bad ending, you don't find out about Gremory, Dominique, or even Alfred's true intentions, and the castle remains standing. I could easily see a plot where they take advantage of that and wind up abducting Miriam and having her take Gebel's place in their plans.

2
webb79•

Miriam boss would be so epic...

2
ShadowDeath7•

You are right but hey! i think we all expect some cutscenes or more things because took so much time, if its just a change of character and some new moves, that could release more fast...

5
CptBrian•

I hope I'm wrong but the announcement makes it sound like a low effort mod.

Exactly, and if this is the case, then Zangetsu's mode was effectively already 80% done since last year(I made a save file to start as Zangetsu*(and Dominique btw)* with his moveset, and game's world did change a bit as a result too, like added gates/portals where Miriam could traverse, but Zangetsu couldn't), so even more lazy if there's seriously no story or anything added on top.

Not sure if this link will work, but this is the Zangetsu .sav file from that 7/16 post https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/597530070847848458/600832913063280660/Story_Slot18.sav so you can have fun comparing the differences a few days from now.

Phavarello•

So it will basically work like SOTN's Richter mode. Am I right?

7
Sorenthaz•

I mean it's basically the equivalent of the Belmont modes in past Castlevanias. Though that would be disappointing if we don't get a unique boss fight with Miriam.

7
McMurderpaws•

There's already a fight with Miriam in the game: Doppelganger.

1
Sorenthaz•

Well I'd expect it to be Zangetsu vs Zangetsu in that case.

Wow, An official randomiser update sounds awesome and is something I feel like more metroidvanias should have.
They seem like such a fun idea, the only experience J have had is a bit of super metroid randomiser which was fun but I didn’t put enough restrictions on it and “failed” because I couldn’t mach ball.

TL;DR More metroidvanias should have official randomiser modes.

14
ahhhghost•

My hope is that they were spending time also working on the other content and decided to announce Zangetsu a bit later to offset the wait time for the other dlc. Fingers crossed we'll see more content in 2020.

13
Zoro_Messatsu•

Yeah its possible. At least it shows that the game isnt "dead" and we arent fools for expecting something new.

Though i am confused about the Zangetsu, Evil train and Doppleganger boss fights in this mode.... how are they gonna play out?

8
thedarkfreak•

I hope it's a bad ending continuation, like Julius mode in the Soma games. If you get the bad ending, the castle remains standing, and you never learn of Gremory or Dominique's treachery. They could easily spin that into Dominique leading Miriam to being captured, and Miriam taking Gebel's place in the castle and their plans. Thus, it's up to Zangetsu to end things.

3
Zoro_Messatsu•

Oh wow that sounds awesome. But i doubt its gonna be anything like that. Sadly they have already said that theres no story cutscenes etc for Zangetsu. Its a shame, i wanted more story. I really like the bloodstained universe and characters.

7
daman4567•

Nice spoilers man, I still haven't finished the game.

KidArk•

Jesus dies in the bible shoot is that a spoiler too?

0
Gerggus•

Forget you saw it then lol. After 11 months of the game being out, youre going to see spoilers. Too bad, get over it.

0
Sorenthaz•

So Zangetsu's playthrough is basically just the Belmont mode; guess that isn't too surprising, though I wonder who'll be the third playable character then.

Randomizer sounds like they added enough elements to it to keep things interesting. Guess it won't totally make up for the lack of the originally planned roguelike mode, but it's definitely better than nothing.

12
McMurderpaws•

It's been confirmed that the third character is not Dominique, despite what data miners have reported.

Best guesses are Alfred, O.D., Gebel or maybe Johannes. (Jojo doesn't have much animation so far so I think that'd put him on the very outside for possibilities. My best guess is O.D. for more Alucard references.)

3
Sorenthaz•

OD would be really fun if they played up the 'totally not Alucard' bit.

I'm mostly anxious about the multiplayer mode at this point though. I would love to see something like Castlevania: Harmony of Despair reborn in Bloodstained, or even just a online co-op version of Bloodstained, but I get the feeling with the current track record that it might not happen at all or they'll do some very low effort thing like just having multiplayer boss rush.

9
McMurderpaws•

Oof. If the only multiplayer we got was to be Boss Rush mode, that would royally piss me off.

If they did a Harmony of Despair rip-off where there were 6 or so big levels that players had to work cooperatively to complete and had separate character progression, I'd be good with that. I originally assumed that multiplayer was going to be for the Roguelike mode, but since that was cancelled, multiplayer story mode or an HoD-like mode would be the next best thing.

6
shimrion•

I've been going with the assumption that all the extra modes will be copied off the least impressive versions of those modes from older Igavanias for any that actually existed. So for example, the extra characters will be like Richter mode from SotN and the co-op mode will be like the co-op boss rush mode from PoR. That way I won't be disappointed if they do turn out like that, and if they do wind up being more I get to be pleasantly surprised. That being said, a Harmony of Despair styled co-op mode is what I truly want. Co-op story mode would be cool too, but I absolutely loved HoD and something like it as the co-op mode for Bloodstained would be a dream come true.

1
Solliel•

Gebel is best boy. Definitely want him.

5
SckeythClan Bullwhip•

It's been confirmed that the third character is not Dominique, despite what data miners have reported.

Nah, give me playable Susie or Anne!

3
McMurderpaws•

Susie mode where she was basically Kirby would be pretty great. Just run around, chowing down on monsters. And every time she clears a room, Miriam runs in behind her saying, "Save some for me? :("

9
TangeloTomato•

I could have sworn they mentioned that the second and third playable characters won't just be an "Albus" mode with no story or cutscenes. Guess they had to go back on that. Ah well.

12
FacePunchMonday•

After 20 years of playing SotN I still am not good enough to actually complete Richter mode, and I fully expect a similar experience with zangetsu mode but either way I'm totally excited to give it a shot this week!!!

Also looking forward to this randomizer mode too!

Love this game and hope we get a sequel someday!

It's been 84 years gif

Now we will have a break from the repetitive posts of map compilation.

10
maxschreck616:Whip:•

Nah, those will still happen, same as in the Castlevania sub. At least here we only have one game map people constantly ask about, and no shitty shirt spammers over here yet.

4
Ninjanomic•

You spoke their name, they'll be crawling up the walls like Beurs come this time next week, ha!... ugh

4
EZPZKILLMEPLZ•

I was genuinely worried that it was abandoned. Glad to see its just a case of the update taking a while.

9
maxschreck616:Whip:•

Was really hoping to finally have a more substantial second character playthrough this time around. I'm not surprised there isn't really any new story elements or characters to interact with, that's how it usually goes in Iga's games, it was just something I was hoping he/they would expand on finally.

9
McMurderpaws•

It's definitely disappointing for the development time that was spent on it. PC hackers reported he was already basically done at launch as listed in this write-up, so if the devs weren't spending time making content for him, what have they been doing for the last 4 months since the Switch patch that prevented them from releasing him already?

10
maxschreck616:Whip:•

Yeah, after all this time, I really expected Iga and his team to do something pretty substantial with an alternate character/playthrough for a change. Those areas are usually pretty barebones in the other Castlevania games he's worked on but with this one, especially with a pretty good sized budget, I thought maybe things would be different. Instead, after all this time, we are finally going to get Zangetsu and it's just the regular old run through and kill stuff, but as someone else. So yeah, hopefully all this time has actually went to something substantial and a bit more impactful. We'll see I suppose.

Don't get me wrong, I still love this game and this man and don't regret buying this game a half dozen or so times. But dammit, was really hoping for some more story content and/or some additional dialogue. Oh well. I'm done ranting now, thanks.

5
McMurderpaws•

Yeah, I 100% agree. I love the game. My complaints come out of a place of wanting it to be the best it can possibly be, and adding new things to do is better than just doing exactly the same stuff wearing a different face.

Plus I was really hoping for some more David Hayter dialog, because he's awesome.

Because the Switch is garbage and holds everything back. At this point they should have made this game without the fucking Switch, but money calls.

Yes, and that money directly correlates to "the most amount of paying customers". Why would they scrap that?

3
[deleted]•

They shouldn't. But they shouldn't fucking lie about their fucking capabilities either. The whole thing was a shitshow from the start, and they are lucky people like the game after fucking it up for months on end.

I mean jesus man they fucking deluded backers into selecting 60 dollars and then backpedaled and made the content for a price lol. The whole thing from the start is one of the most poorly run kickstarters I have ever seen, but it gets a pass because luckily the games were good.

2
BobbyBobbie•

I don't think too many people would argue with you about it being managed poorly.

1
markandspark•

It's most popular on the Switch. If anything they should have built it primarily for the Switch.

1
[deleted]•

Building anything primarily for the Switch is not a good idea for revenue. I think you have a bit of delusion here lol. Generally, building anything for a low powered system means a lot of trouble porting to anything.

0
markandspark•

No need to be a dick about it

1
miyucuk:Sword:•

I was very upset because of the removal of "random dungeon mode". However, any content better than nothing. I'm happy

6
vordaq•

TBH I was expecting a randomizer the whole time. Idk why they phrased it like they were cancelling something.

3
miyucuk:Sword:•

While this game was in development, at kickstarter campaing they said there will be a random dungeon mode. It was one of the stretch goals.

Random dungeon mode is a mode where game creates a map which was created by procedurally created rooms. So each time you played a new game on Random dungeon mode, the map, monsters and loot would be different.

Now, they said they couldn't implement this feature. Instead they made a mode called randomizer which takes place in the same old static map.

6
vordaq•

Right I know. What that means to me is "we're still making randomizer, we just couldn't get the entrance rando feature to work."

3
miyucuk:Sword:•

As far as I remember, they said "the development of this game wouldn't permit for a random dungeon mode". So, they wouldn't even try it. I would love to be mistaken/wrong.

3
The_Twerkinator•

Despite being disappointed with the roguelike mode getting scrapped, the randomizer still sounds pretty fun. I'm excited to come back to the game!

Wow finally something new. I was starting to lose hope about the game. Pretty reassuring TBH.

5
Amalaric-GoTH•

FINALLY! More content for this game.

5

My favorite part is that I got the special edition on pc and they are waiting for all dlc to be released till I get it. I think that’s kind of shit.

King_Ziltoid•

e part is that I got the special edition on pc and they are waiting for all dlc to be released till I get it. I think that’s kind of shit.

Ditto. Had I known it was going to be that way I would've just purchased the digital version. Now I gotta wait until everything is finished before I get my physical version.

4
KillTheScribe•

Well I guess that's something. If mutiplayer isn't scrapped it might be cool to do a randomizer with a Miriam and a Zangetsu.

3
DisgorgeXClan Katana•

If they scrap multiplayer I'm gonna be really upset. I was excited about all the other stuff from kickstarter, but the goal I was motivated to hit was local multiplayer, and I backed at $100 and convinced idk how many dozens of strangers online to back, and about 7 or 8 of my friends IRL who like SoTN to back it. I hustled for this shit like it was a political campaign, because I wanted desperately to play a dank local multiplayer igavania.

I was REALLY salty when the game released early and incomplete. I did not want it before the backer goals were all done. People kept whining and whining and whining, and the devs caved and released it after finishing the core game, and it's been the exact chaos I was worried about ever since.
