Anyone else have to deal with squadmates playing selfishly?

Discussion

I play with a small group of old friends and one guy just plays so selfishly that it really pisses me off sometimes and I know it costs us wins. Basically K/D is his priority. They do things like thirst a kill over downing the 2nd enemy even though the thirst will cause him/us to die from the 2nd enemy. They will quickly run off to get the best loot and prioritize that over helping out the squad with early threats. When I am engaging an enemy they won't come to help you not die, they come to get the kill while you are the bait. They will tell one of us to go get the last scav box and pretend it's so we can get the loot dropm but really it's because the location is in a risky area. This person is usually the sole survivor when the rest of us got killed.

Shit like that. Would love to hear your stories and solutions to this besides just "stop playing with them".

Like fuck this guy wants us to hold his hand through being an adult

Let him get it out. Sometimes all you need is a good vent on an anonymous forum haha

We’re here for you OP

Thanks.

Fuck Watermelon_drops. These are my long time irl boys and being an adult is not letting some online gameplay ruin a friendship that is otherwise solid.

If these are your boy’s you can call em out on it.

Solid enough to not tell him about your issue with him but anonymously post it on reddit?

Call him on it. Chances are the others will back you up... Or you need a new crew.

Always been like this in BR, even MP. When you run into a good teammate, invite them for another game when you've either won or lost. Build a community of your own.

Good advice, but my situation is just playing at a certain time with my old friends from back home. We are stuck with each other. It's the best way to keep in touch and "spend time" with the boys while I'm away.

How about when you open a box and your squadmate blasts threw the door and steals everything right in front of you

"_______ drop that fucking gun or I'm not buying you back when you die"

it works

Yup this also.

Yep. There's 2 of us on our team that notice it and we just try to keep it in mind while playing. If one of us dies, then we watch their screen and call out things that they're not communicating to the rest of the group. We also tell them what to do if they don't - like not following a team mate who's moving towards a buy station etc.

You need to start telling them what to do - if you call them out it will get negative, so instead take charge and start giving orders - give it with a reason e.g. "Lets go get the scav together so we can support each other". Or just say "Nah that scav is risky we don't need to get it." If they want it, then they'll say so and can take point on it.
Those are the people you need to play more tactically with. Don't rush or be point man because they don't have you back.

This sounds so familiar. Had a mate who died early, died in the gulag, then decided he was bored waiting so started playing guitar into his mic. We bought him back, cause that's what teammates do, then he proceeded to hide in a corner as us other two got annihilated

And no, he didn't play team sports as a youngster

Matty2G:Xbox:•

I have two seperate friends that ALWAYS move on without any communication at all. They never say "alright, let's head towards this area" or anything like that. One of them always lands alone, even though we all agreed to land at a specific spot before jumping, and then he rages when he dies because he didn't land with us on the marker.

I seriously think his logic is, "Watch how many compliments the squad gives me when I wipe a whole team by myself", but he never wipes the whole team. He usually gets lasered by a team of 3 and dies immediately lmao

camisdabomb•

I’d suggest sticking to him like glue. Don’t separate and give him the opportunity to call out some fetch quest. If anything, suggest he go gets something first, maybe get your other friends to agree and add pressure. Then maybe you all can move as a team?

If you’re close to him that means the fight is on him too.

You know what his limitations are as a player, adapt and take advantage of it.

3
KryptusOP•

Ya just out of saltiness I wanted to just follow him around and use him as bait, lol.

TLAU5•

This is the best strategy for teammates that always pursue that one enemy they saw from 100m away without telling anyone, or the loot goblin that's in a fully loaded squad but can't resist side-tracking into buildings to get crates, even though everything is full and money doesn't matter.

I just follow them instead of running point.

2
TLAU5•

I have 1 friend that's really bad about it. Slides in to steal guns out of crates when someone else opens them. Never stays with the team. Always the last to join when we push a team so he can get clean up kills/not die. Thirsts kills instead of going for active shooters.

It's childish and a couple of us decided to treat is as so and give him "Timeout" if he does it. I will hold onto $4500+ for 2-3 minutes before buying him back, in addition to having him be the last teammate to be bought back if there's 2+ waiting to redeploy. They'll either start playing like a decent human or they'll just spectate and bitch on the mic (which is fine with me). He actually started playing with a different group of friends for ~2 weeks and didn't get any wins so he came back and plays ball like an adult.

Try going into Plunder/Blood Money with that crew. The game mode really rewards selfishness, because the optimal way to win is either A. Loot areas quickly and efficiently or B. Play aggressively as if it was Kill Confirmed. If they don't do well even in that game mode, then it's time to find a new group of people to play with.

TXscales•

I have a buddy that blindly goes for recon flags and scavengers and it gets us killed so many times. Shits triggering

2
KryptusOP•

Ya dude does this as well. "Oh we have soo much money, we better go spend it before we get killed and another team gets it."

proceeds to run straight to closest buy station and get killed.

Nobody listens to me about slowly clearing houses. I get that's it's boring most times, but shit it's common sense.

Had this experience. My friend wanted to be the hero. Make big plays. High risk high reward. But it never worked. Acted like a pro player but in reality he’s average skill and couldn’t carry like that.

Was mad every game when his strategy wouldn’t work. Only cared for his kills. Would exaggerate his KD to us even though we could look it up on COD Tracker (lol). Was upset if we won after he had died. Made horrible tactical plays often that would get us squad wiped because he “needed to kill that guy”. I told him he could win, get kills and have fun all at the same time if he played for the boys. Wasn’t interested. Just kept making bad plays and raging.

I ended up trolling him in our last session together, then I dipped.

Didn’t bother confronting. Just found new people to play with. Funniest part was he was the worst of the three of us. Competitive gaming can reveal some interesting character traits.

Have a few different squads I run with now. We win far more often. My KD has gone up significantly because I play with lads who work as a group. And we have fun doing it.

Gaming is supposed to be fun. I understand if you’re playing sweats at pro level. If you’re not though, don’t waste your energy.

Sometimes there is a fine line between selfish and smart plays. My team used to complain about me being selfish but since i started talking through what im doing i dont get the complaints. I was prone to scaling high ground during an engagement or going for a highly aggressive flank, whilst not telling anyone. The reason being if i told them nobody would hold the current position and the relocation would no longer be advantageous. Now everyone is on board with it we do some nice 2-2 splits etc. As a "selfish" player let me address your points.

Thirsting the kill - this is very common and sometimes is the right thing to do. This is more tactical naivety than being selfish, suggest only confirming kill when its "safe" to do so. Pure selfish you want to wipe the whole squad solo. 3 kills is better than 1!

Running off for loot - This is bad play, if you get the wipe v the squad all the loot is yours anyway. The motivation perhaps is to get a certain weapon, discuss this beforehand. Im a cracking sniper, one of my squad uses the RPG at the right time. It makes sense that if we find one of those 2 weapons it goes to that person. Another guy uses 100mag weapons really well, ill happily take a 30R M4 and let him have the 100R kilo. If he argues that he wants the sniper and the best AR then hes an idiot.

using you as bait - i disagree on this one, if he kills the guy youve been backed up sufficiently, if he waits for you to die that's a different story. Theres also scenarios that you are rescuable but it will likely lead to both of us getting killed. Field , rock, enemy snipers. I can get to the rock i can revive you but then we are 2 pinned down the snipers know exactly where we are and they are free to move. Id rather assault the snipers and come back after the squad wipe.. or see you in the gulag!

Sending people to do missions - just say no, its too risky. I am a fan of the high ground spotting enemies approaching a capture area for example, but ill be tagging them and shooting them as they hit the area, the squad agree now that this works better sometimes than all 4 of us hiding on the flag with no intel coming in. Suggest you talk to him about this kind of role and declare certain things too risky. We actually sent someone on a suicide mission the other day, i was last man left with about 7000, with one scavenger box left for another 6000ish. I bought our worst player back with the sole objective of securing the box off a very risky roof which was surrounded by enemy. Meant we could buy back 2 squad members instead. It went even better than planned as he actually managed to secure the box and escape! Communication was again key, he was happy to do it and with 3 of us guaranteed to be back (within reason) he would have much higher chance of coming back.

Sole survivor - the true mark of the selfish player, but also potentially the big brain player. Its a balance between going out on your sword v living to fight another day. Sometimes the fight is lost and its best to escape with the money. Other times if you'd have stayed the fight might have been won. Communciation is king in this one again, if im extracting itll be "sorry X , i can't get to you im securing the money". They will either agree or perhaps itll be "theres a second squad engaging there's a decent chance to grab me while they are distracted"

TL;DR : Theres a fine line between selfish and smart- live communication is the answer.

KryptusOP•

Very good points. I understood them all prior to making my post. The exception scenarios are not what is happening.

I'm talking about going for the thirst when there is a second enemy in full view about to start shooting at him. He rather get a confirmed kill and die, rather then try and down the second guy, but risk not getting the first kill. It's even worse when one of us is downed next to him and he basically just gives up both our lives for one confirmed kill.

1
j0nny27•

Simplest solution is to have a chat with him then, id do it constructively, "unlucky, you had a good shot at getting the 2nd guy if youd gone for him". If hes run off "where are you. we need your help!!"

Doesnt need to be a slagging match, my team told me they felt like they were a 3 with a solo player. We tightened up comms and now we do better. Try not to blame him for losing just suggest ways to improve

floodsye•

From the sound of it, you are playing with a different type of player than yourself that is using your positioning as bait for more kills.

Also, you must remember. Winning doesn't really mean much in BR when you've done it hundreds if not thousands of times. I personally couldn't care less if I win a game at this point since there's no reward, no satisfaction. I feel this way because I could win by killing 20-40 players, but what's the point when someone can just as well win by hiding in buildings and doing recons...the win doesn't mean much in terms of skill or fun. However, kills and combat do.

I suggest you find new guys to play with that are ok with a slower, less skill heavy playstyle. You can also adjust your playstyle to his by simply using easy kill methods like shotguns, RPGs, and claymores that stop noob and pro in their tracks just the same.

1
KryptusOP•

I'm the player who wants more action. I want to spend money on loadouts and UAVs and to do bounties. He wants to spend the money on revives and ammo boxes instead. I want to rotate strategically and not just run to where the recon flag or buy station is as fast as you can. I'll take a 10 kill game where we finish top 20 over a 2 kill game where we win.

1
SuperSoper3•

Oh man if your all about the kills, there's a mode called multiplayer.
