The new High Elf Ranger animations don't seem to match the overall aesthetic of High Elves

Warhammer II

All the high elf troops until now have looked super disciplined, standing perfectly still until combat and even in combat their attacks are purposeful and elegant.

The new high elf rangers use dark elf corsair animations and it really shows, they stick out like a sore thumb against the other high elf units with their sword flailing and throat cutting gestures.

It's a small thing but it just super stands out to me that these high elf units use animations that fit dark elves but not high elves.

I don't know, I think it fits. They are supposed to be this relatively undisciplined, scattered force of guerilla fighters who mercilessly harass and delay the enemy until Ulthuan's standing armies arrive at the scene, from what I can gather. So it makes sense that they're less regimented and have an aggressive style of combat.

Obviously I'm trying to explain away the fact that CA just didn't want to create a separate animation rig for them, but if you ignore that one throat cutting animation that they do, then pretty much all their other animations still fit with their unit aesthetic.

Isn't that what Shadow Warriors already do? :p

Rangers sorta seem like a "quota" unit of 'well we gotta give the HE X number of new units, since they're in the dlc' and HE already has a really stacked unit roster, especially at the higher tiers. They might have a niche in multiplayer, but in campaign the HE play style really favors the silver shields of spearmen for not having a front line that needs three turns to replenish after every single fight.

And yeah they do seem to occasionally get a little lazy with dlc units occasionally. Stone Trolls looking nothing like stone trolls, free company militia running around yelling 'For Karl Franz' while fighting for Aranessa and Alarielle/Arkhan's crossfaction units being near a complete afterthought etc.

mrcrazy_monkeyDwarfs•

The last HE DLC had 2 units? And people complained there werent enough.

This one has 5, and now people are complaining they are being lazy reusing animations?

46
Khelgar_Ironfist_•

These elgi are never content no matter what you do..

7
mrcrazy_monkeyDwarfs•

Yeah I dont really get their logic. Would you rather not have the rangers in the game, because they dont fill a role in SP? It's kinda like when archers were added to the Empire, yeah Crossbowmen are better in every way, but sometimes in the early game you need a cheaper option.

6
Zerak-TulWarhammer•

Of course there'll always be people who complain there's not enough new units in DLCs - that's why we get 'quota' units to begin with.

Personally I'd much rather see a focus on improving weak units to make them worth using than just adding more. CA has done that - e.g. White Lions look like they've finally gotten some love in campaign, but e.g. Silver Helms weren't touched and still look like a unit that's largely not worth using.

But like I said, the HE unit roster barely had any holes to begin with, so it's not like it was easy for them to come up with new stuff that would actually fill a usable role.

6
OverlordQuasar•

They did have some pretty big holes in multiplayer, and the new units really fill them (Silverin Guard are a decently cheap unit that can actually hold against stuff like a Beastmen or Greenskins rush, rangers allow HE to clear chaff since they used to really struggle with swarms of cheap infantry, and the RoR Talons of Tor Caleda boost their ability to beat monsters through synergy with dragons and sisters, since HE used to really struggle against armored monsters). War lions and lion chariots are nice, but the AP anti infantry role was already served by nobles on chariots, although war lions are nice due to being relatively inexpensive by HE standards.

I think half the units were made primarily to help HE not be low tier in multiplayer, since their high cost and the fact that a lot of their units (spearmen, phoenix guard and especially swordmasters, ithilmar and tiranoc chariots, silver helms to some degree, handmaidens, frostheart phoenixes especially) are not at all cost effective. really matters in MP. In singleplayer, having a really top heavy roster with expensive but very elite units is a good thing, because you can build armies that are all phoenix guard and sisters of Avelorn, and your AI opponents aren't smart enough to counter the sisters properly. Even Sisters of Avelorn, which are one of the most powerful units in the game in single player, are kinda mediocre in multiplayer since human opponents are much better at swarming you with harass tools and going around your frontline, using the fact that you can't afford enough frontline units to protect the sisters without sacrificing all of your mass for preventing monsters from just walking through your lines.

Then some of the units are primarily for campaign (arcane phoenixes seem kinda trash from what I've seen of them in MP, not enough better than a flamespyre phoenix or sun dragon to ever be worth taking), and white lion chariots fill a niche that HE already had filled. I'd prefer this, where there are units meant for both SP and MP, over the last high elf DLC, where there's an OP lord, a hero that's only good in campaign, and two archers that are decent in campaign but niche in MP.

Kelembribor21Into the fires of battle, unto the Anvil of War!•

Compared to other factions High Elves have gotten least amount of unique animations for units or lords. Mostly being based on Wood Elf animations made for DLC in Game 1.

In this DLC Greenskins got Grom, Rogue Idol, River Trolls, Hag and Snotling Pump Wagon's all having unique animations along with models.

High Elves only new animations are for White Lions and some for Eltharion on foot, and Imrik blowing horn.

Ranger is kitbash of Archer head and body of Shadow Warrior using animation of Corsair, only swords might be new assets, so it is far from being truly new unit.

4
mrcrazy_monkeyDwarfs•

I mean it's to be expected. All humanoid factions are going to be re-using animations. The chaos dwarfs will likely fight with the same animations current dwarfs use. The only unit in the HE roster that isnt in the game that would require new animations is probably the sky cutter chariot. A lot of people are saying that they wont even use the rangers in SP so why should CA do a specific animation for a unit that's specifically for MP use? I dont see any of this of bias, but just focusing time/money and key items while trying to give us the most content.

3
EducatingMoronsAenarions Kingdom•

The question is, would the game be better off without those units at all? Personally I think it's fine, it's a pretty low tier unit that people won't use much outside of mp anyway. Also think the stone trolls look just fine, they just ate some rocks and have slightly different skin, that's all.

I think it's fair to point those things out, corners have clearly been cut. But those corners aren't that important (to me) especially since we are getting so much stuff and plenty for free.

8
GreenColoured•

That's naggarothi talk as I see it!

2
goboks•

There is no such thing as undisciplined high elf fighters. Also, you are talking about shadow warriors in terms of the tactical role they fill, not made up rangers.

Another irony, they are positioned as the cheapest chaff, which high elves aren't supposed to have anyway, but the design is based on an old model for a hero. A model I have on my desk actually.

0†
MathiasFraenkel•

That's not completely accurate, the white lions are the same. And it would be plain wierd if rangers, units that are suppose to be operating in forest and in skirmish roles in the lore walked around as a regimented force

26
THEDOSSBOSS99Just Doss•

He's talking about idle animations, not their staggered formation

30
GreenColoured•

They could always do what they've done in the past and remove some animations. For disciplined units, removal of some animations ends up looking more disciplined.

5
sspikanor11•

Agree. It would be as easy as to make them use the wardancer animations, no idea why they used Corsair ones.

19
WrethZOPWrethz•

Not sure that's true male and female animations are different I think

6
StormWarriors2•

I mean if they were a mixed force of both male and female it would make sense then. Banshees for example in 40k are not all women but fight exactly the same.

4
WrethZOPWrethz•

lore-wise all the elven units are a mix of male and female except for a few specific exceptions such as sisters of averlorn.

14
GreenColoured•

We need another RoR for the Sisters.

"The Bruhs of Avelorn"

25
not-a-spoonwolololo•

There are no mixed units in TW:WH2. That is because the male and female elf models use a different skeleton each and each animation needs to fit on the right skeleton rig. In addition to that, units cant have multiple animations sets applied to them.

14
StormWarriors2•

Oh i know, I am just saying you could probably do a face swap and most people wouldn't really complain.

3
retief1•

AFAIK, the one exception is repanse. The result is that people have used her head to make stuff like this mod.

3
LeadbaptistDe La Tercio•

Well if we are being completely honest they were shorhorned in soooo

17
Nurlehatesme•

You're getting downvoted already, but you're not wrong.

They don't fill any real gaps that needed filling in the roster, and they're made from completely recycled assets and use completely recycled animations.

13
SantaMariaD17Teclis•

I would disagree respectfully with their ability to fill a role in the HE army in relation to Multiplayer. One of the major weaknesses inherit to the Asur is their cost. The cheapest unit of infantry they have in MP is their spearmen, and all they actually do, albeit very well, is hold the line with the benefit of anti-large.

White Lions, in their most cost effective sense, act as supplements to spearmen against heavily armored front lines. However, for their cost, they lack staying power (24 MD without martial prowess and low health) and don’t trade that effectively against light-infantry as a single engagement will weaken them significantly.

Rangers provide a decent anti-infantry and 20 % physical resistance bonus, a healthy 30 MA and 36 MD with martial prowess, a strider trait on top of their 40 speed, and a low buying point (relative to HE) of 600. They aren’t World Enders but they definitely improve the infantry game of the HE by giving them more options to work with.

13
Nurlehatesme•

Sorry, I should have been more precise in my original comment. I was talking about campaign, which is what the overwhelming majority of people play based on CA's own stats.

Also HE aren't really supposed to have a cheap low-tier infantry anyway, that's kind of contrary to their whole faction identity.

10
retief1•

Even in campaign, "low tier infantry that can shred through darkshards and bleakswords" can come in handy. It isn't really a critical niche, but it isn't nothing.

4
GreenColoured•

That's called a good thing.

Having strengths and weaknesses keeps the game fresh, and prevents factions from blobbing up and overlapping too much.

4
SantaMariaD17Teclis•

Diversity is great for the game, but my original point is that this unit will help their infantry game by providing them with more options as they don’t have many. Note that I mentioned the cheap cost in relation to High Elves, so it’s not totally relaxing this weakness.

4†
LeadbaptistDe La Tercio•

Im okay with being downvoted, just part of reddit. But thank you for recognizing it and putting my snarky comment into a format that is more respectful and accurately conveys the frustration of this unit

5
NemoTheElf•

Not all High Elves are sophisticated urbanites. There are outlying areas of Ulthuan where things are a little "rougher", especially in the Outer Kingdoms like Chrace, Cothique, Nagarythe, Yvresse, and islands near the cost where the citizen-militia can't reach immediately. It falls onto these High Elves to defend themselves and since you're probably facing Dark Elf corsairs, Norscan raiders, and generic pirates on the regular, you kind of learn to fight like one.

To me the Rangers fit a needed role as anti-infantry fodder as well as represent some of the less foppish sides of High Elven society. I don't care for the reused assets for their models, but their motions make perfect sense. High Elves are not "the good Elves", and can be just as brutal as their counterparts when they need to be.

13
goboks•

That's not the lore. Every citizen is in the citizen levy and trains with spear and bow at a minimum.

They wouldn't "kind of" learn to fight another way. Also, culturally, they would view those ways as inferior.

3†
NemoTheElf•

Firstly, High Elf rangers are a, if niche, tabletop unit from Warhammer Quest, we just get a variety that doesn't use magic. They still are a kind of scout, explorer, and skirmisher.

Secondly, the Citizen-levy is based around cities, towns, and villages. There are Elves who live outside these areas, and while they're part of the militia, circumstances mean they don't neccesarily train or fight like them. High Elves aren't a monolith: Elves from Cothique raid and reave Norscan villages, Chracian Elves live like woodsmen and hunters. There's a wide variety of lifestyles and cultures that don't always translate into the mechanics or units.

15
goboks•

Those rangers are a hero unit. Not the same thing. As you said, a magic user. Calling something a ranger is a common fantasy trope.

And you're wrong on the lore. High Elf army books explicitly state that every elf has to join. That means even a Swordmaster would've spent time in the militia in his youth. Even Finubar. This is just your head canon.

1†
NemoTheElf•

The unit design with the circlet, cape, duel-swords, and armor is almost a piece by piece copy of the Ranger mini. At most it's a more mundane variation, at least it's inspired by it.

I am not. I literally just said that Rangers are part of the citizen militia, they just don't fight in a conventional way because they're already warriors. In old, old, old Warhammer there were High Elf Warriors that served the same role. It's not that outlandish as it's already based in the background.

3
Thenidhogg•

Hmm seems like the throat cutting should go, but it is worth keeping in mind that almost half of the High Elves ended up joining Malekith (including Imrik) so it's not like they are lawfully good paragons, even Alith Anar gets up to some weird shit

6†
TerraneauxWarhammer•

it is worth keeping in mind that almost half of the High Elves ended up joining Malekith

That writing was absolutely trash and out of character, though.

It's true they're not Lawful Good paragons, though.

25
Vulkan192•

We don’t talk about End Times trash here.

5
Gecko_Mk_IV•

Yes, but the salient point to take from that is (in my opinion) that they ended up joining Malekith. And that the High Elves since then haven't really wanted to come anywhere near that sort of behaviour. It doesn't mean the Asur are all the same, but it's kind of like real world nazis.. you're not going to look good if the way you act resembles how nazis acted/act.

Alith Anar and the Shadow Warriors are an exception in that regard as they fight dirty and ruthlessly in their own way. Because elves don't always hold grudges, but when they do it's serious (also see Eltharion and his hatred for greenskins). And even his Shadow Warriors are not like Druchii in their mannerisms.

2
GreenColoured•

Would be nice if their animations reflected that. Or even a poison attack.

2
eldankus•

In the End Times, Malekith becomes a good guy and Tyrion becomes the avatar of Khaine.

You're misrepresenting what happened to prove a point.

-3†
not-a-spoonwolololo•

Even if he is, its even less useful trying to use the End Times lore to prove a point about lore.

Except when the point you are trying to prove is that the End Times lore is completely disconnected from the rest of the Warhammer Fantasy lore and in no way a good point of reference when it comes to lore.

7
eldankus•

Yes, but the salient point to take from that is (in my opinion) that they ended up joining Malekith. And that the High Elves since then haven't really wanted to come anywhere near that sort of behaviour.

That's specifically what I was responding to. He was referencing Alith Anar and Imrik joining Malekith in the End Times to prove a point about them.

4
GreenColoured•

A good guy that also summoned a demon to kill Finubar.

6
eldankus•

Look I'm not going to sit here and defend the writing in End Times cuz it's a mess but Malekith passes through the flame of Asuryan and the ghosts of the Pheonix Kings and the dead Princes/Princesses of the realms rally on Malekith's side (the ghost of Princess Ystranne kills Lokhir for example).

Alith Anar picks a side at the last minute, after it is pretty clear that Malekith is "the good guy". Again, terrible writing but my point is Alith Anar isn't evil just because he chose Malekith's side.

6
goboks•

That was before he became a good guy, duh.

2
Gecko_Mk_IV•

Yeeees. Maybe I should preface my comments with 'except for the End Times'.

Sorry, no, not a fan of End Times lore.

2
eldankus•

I might have misunderstood but I was saying that they only teamed up with Malekith due to the shitty writing in End Times, but that by that point in the End Times Malekith is on "the good side"

0
GreenColoured•

even Alith Anar gets up to some weird shit

That would be consistent to the guy who snuck into Morathi....

0
InuOkami•

I agree; i wouldn't ask for new animations but something that fits them better than corsairs, looking down on pose is not something any HEs unit should look like. I mean, you can tell by seeing that and their moddel that they don't have much work put into it, not blaming CA but it feels like using the Shadow warriors model with Archers Head.

2
Aethelwyna•

The dlc is just for the greenskins.

2
Kuikixpres•

that animations make match with the black ark corsairs

1†
filthy_pollo•

New animations are expensive and provide more MBs each state of unit, so these assets will come in WH3

1
tjwang4496•

I think maybe it would be better if they made rangers females and adopted Wardancers' animations. That would give them a wilder look but still fit HE.
