BLEACH Rewatch Week 7: Episodes 35-41 Discussion

First-Timer, subbed for 35-41 and dubbed for 17-22

Gonna do something different and have my dub thoughts at the end of my comment from now on, so it’s easier for you guys to skip ‘em if you just want to see my thoughts on the current episodes.

Episode 35

• God I feel so bad for Hinamori right now.

• Aight yeah this asshole totally either killed Aizen or knows who did. Like who grins like this when someone just fucking died?

• Mmmmmmmm fun, I have a new character I want to Bright Slap punch the living daylights out of. u/Raiking02 calling Gin “this asshole from Bleach” when doing the seiyuu rundown during his Kara no Kyoukai rewatch is definitely accurate.

• The flashback of Ichigo giving Chad his nickname was really nice.

• Yes this is true. A trap, or are they just busy with what happened to Aizen?

• So Ishida and Orihime are Ephraim then.

• Hahaha he just bent the sword.

• Oh, this guy’s voice… the Nightmare of Solomon?!

• Anyways, oh boy looks like this dude’s got his sights set on Chad. That is clearly not going to be good.

• I dunno but this visual effect is really cool.

• Ooooooh Kenpachi vs. Ichigo time next?

Episode 36

• Yo is that what Aizen was writing when Hinamori went to his room the night before? Dude knew he was going to die, damn.

• What are these truths though? I need to know!

• This visual is awesome, just saying.

• Hoooooooooooly shit I jumped. I was getting hyped for the fight to start not fucking this!

• Kenpachi’s so strong he can mentally project stabbing people I guess???

• Oh hey I just noticed, is Rukia’s hair longer? Or was it just that shot?

Episode 37

• …I guess we’re cutting over to Chad’s fight then.

• Ahahahaha complete with the twinkle. Dude was so clearly a pushover, now give us Chad’s fight with that one captain!

• So he just deflected Chad’s attack with his bare hand wow.

• Okay Ichigo calling a bunch of ambulances in advance of beating the shit out of those guys was pretty awesome.

Episode 38

• Aaaaand we’re back to Ichigo vs. Kenpachi even though I now want to know what happened to Chad.

• Damn though, how is Ichigo supposed to beat Kenpachi if the dude can’t be hurt?

• *loud, pained exhale while trying to choke back a scream*

• No, no, no I reject this image. Chad has to be okay. Why is the blood black anyways?

• , alright he’s alive. Captured, but alive.

• Ichigo cut Kenpachi!

• Damn.

• Hooooooboy.

Episode 39

• Okay so inner world fight to make Ichigo strong--what?

• This is actually really fucking awesome though, I hope regular Ichigo does this at some point once he’s out of his inner world.

• Ohoho yeah, seeing shock on his face is nice.

• That’s… ominous…

• Oh I do so love it when the tables finally turn against an overpowered antagonist.

• …and Kenpachi is still so overpowered that he is immediately unfazed anyways welp.

• *wheezing* Okay this has to be my second-favorite gag after Uryu tying the sword to his head. They didn’t need to include it seeing as how he just has a wig of his normal hairstyle but they did anyways and now I can’t stop laughing.

• Sorry dude, Ichigo vs. Kenpachi is currently more important than the news of Aizen’s death.

• Bruh.

• Oh yeah let me just casually cut a fucking building in half.

• There’s a face in those flames is that Ichigo’s Hollow mask???

• Wait wha

• ???? This is not happy people??? This is !

Episode 40

• Oh, damn, Ichigo actually did win.

• There’s Yoruichi!

• This is like the same energy as this, with the only difference being that isn’t Yachiru’s blood.

• HOLY SHIT I PREDICTED THIS! Back in episode 25, when I noted this looked just like her!

• Ohohohohohoboy. This is gonna be good.

• Me: Aight gotta look up this dude’s seiyuu now. → MAL: It’s Hideo Ishikawa. → Me: Wait I know that--GENJURO DATTO?! And also the main antagonist in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds as a result! Damn. Aaaaaand it looks like he’s voiced by Liam O’Brien in the dub?

• Ah, of course it’s Byakuya who shows up.

• Hanataro no.

• And now they gave Hanataro a “sore demo”.

Episode 41

• That is very suspicious.

• I would be surprised by this reveal, but before I got to this episode I wanted to make a joke about Yoruichi in my reactions to Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin - Extra Chorus, but I wanted to make sure I was spelling “Yoruichi” correctly for it first and, well, her MAL page didn’t bother hiding anything.

• Pfffffffffft.

• Oh JESUS. Here I was about to make a joke about the song named Senbonzakura and then???? Ganju???

• Ukitake may share his seiyuu with Genjuro but he sure doesn’t sound like him. Dude’s got some range, huh?

• Haha man these two’s banter is hilarious.

• Okay but what does this mean though???

• Byakuya vs. Ichigo rematch!

• …or not because Yoruichi showed up to put a stop to things. Poop.

Dub thoughts and other observations while watching it:

• Ooh I wonder if the funky Hollow mask stuff and/or the white Ichigo have anything to do with Ichigo going nuts against Renji during ep17? I still haven’t forgotten how crazy he looked during that part, and watching it again just made it fresh in my mind.

• WAIT Byakuya mentioned that Ichigo bears a “striking resemblance” to someone back in ep17, was he referring to the same person here in ep41? I need to know who this person is…

• That sad piano/violin music when Rukia got taken back to Soul Society is still my jam btw, anybody got a link to it?

• Keigo in response to Ichigo hitting him in the head during the watermelon teasing: That was my melon! → Me: Good dub.

• Zangetsu… who’s he voiced by at the moment? MAL has two voice actors listed. He sounds slightly more Daguza to me than Full Frontal, but doesn’t actually sound familiar at all so I honestly can’t tell.

• Yo was that Jeralt I heard as Kenpachi? Because he also has Patrick Seitz listed as his English VA, and I can’t just research this outside of MAL because I don’t want to be spoiled on anything by mistake…

• Okay so now we actually have Doug Erholtz voicing a character in this show… and it’s fucking Gin welp. At least I definitely know who he’s voiced by…

• “I do believe you killed my hat.” → lmao Urahara.

• Jidanbo called his axes his babies.

• Whoa Yoruichi actively referred to Kukaku with feminine pronouns in the dub from the start? How are they going to handle the reveal that she’s a lady then, have the guys forget that Yoruichi did that?

• Oh nice Ganju is Kyle Hebert, thought he sounded like Travis Willingham at first but nope. Definitely hear the Falman in his voice, although not really the Kamina?

What is soul sleep? Not sure if I missed something

THE CAT IS A GIRL? AND THE HOT ONE I SEE IN ALL THE FAN ART???? They really got me with just using a different VA. Usually they get someone with an androgynous voice if its supposed to be a different gender than whats suspected.

I take back what I said last week, Rukia x Ichigo forever. Love how he went to hana before checking in with Rukia.

WHAT IS THIS EPISODE SPLIT THAT THIS IS THE LAST ONE THIS WEEK HOW DOES THIS BRIDGE ALTERCATION END. i was getting ready to cancel u/degenerate-edgelord (/s) for leaving the episode split with that cliffhanger but im so excited to get into this week now

Also Ukitake was more soft hearted than I thought. But seems like he’s byakuas level which is nice.

• Seeing Hinamori in such disraught still gets to me.

• You know that tension is running high when two Lieutenants that where classmates get into a swordfight.

• Ise Nanao, Lieutenant of the 8th Squad

• 10th Squad for this ED.

Episode 36

• Behold the glory that is Kenpachi and his bloodlust.

• Important detail: Shinigami rely on Spiritual Pressure for fights, if your Spiritual Pressure isn't high enough you won't be able to hurt your opponent. Also, if you are strong enough you can crush other people with just your Spiritual Pressure.

• Ichigo vs Kenpachi hype!

• 1st Squad for this ED with that awesome Yamaji fanservice (and Iba, Renji and Kira in the back I guess).

Episode 37

• Enjoji Tatsufusa, 3rd Seat of the 8th Squad Honestly, I don't remember anything about this guy. I remembered Jirobo, but got nothing on this guy.

• Ah that's why, he got one-shotted Indiana Jones style.

• Man I love Kyoraku, the guy just wants to take naps, drink some sake and fawn over Nanao-chan. Also, as expected from a Captain he is crazy strong: deflected Chad's attack like he was swatting away a fly.

• Flashback and backstory time for Chad and how he became friends with Ichigo!

• I love Ichigo calling the ambulance for the guys he is about to beat up.

• Chad, I admire your determination and all the buildup on that single attack but nope, not happening against Shunsui.

• Minor censor here, they didn't show Chad's wound when Kyoraku cut him.

• 8th Squad for this ED, for obvious reasons.

Episode 38

• Good guy Kyoraku letting Chad live.

• Unohana Retsu, Captain of the 4th Squad

• Tosen Kaname, Captain of the 9th Squad

• Komamura Sajin, Captain of the 7th Squad

• Also, the guy with the 69 tattoo was introduced already in the manga but not in the anime. So I guess you'll have to wait to know his name.

• Ichigo: "I finally cut him, now I can win!" Kenpachi: "Lol nope, get stabbed."

• And finally all 13 Squads have been featured with 13th Squad for this ED.

Episode 39

• Since he appeared again and I didn't take a screencap of him before: Old Man Zangetsu

• I absolutely love the way White Ichigo fights, throwing Zangetsu like it's a giant kusarigama

• Damn, I forgot how scary Yachiru can be.

• This fight is awesome, Ichigo recieves a massive powerup and yet he is defeated because Kenpachi is just that strong. Also, Kenpachi liking fights to death so much never gets old.

• Manga readers

• ED4! I love that the song conveys exactly what the title says: Happy People!

Episode 40

• Kenpachi and Yachiru backstory time! The more the story progresses the more clear it is that living in Soul Society is not exactly a great afterlife.

• Extra! Rukia's dark secret revealed!

• The sick Captain of the 13th Squad who was absent in the previous Captain meeting.

• Kotetsu Kiyone and Kotsubaki Sentaro, members of the 13th Squad

Episode 41

• Plot twist! Yoruichi is actually a girl and a pretty hot one!

• Scatter, Senbonzakura. One of my favorite commands.

• Ukitake Juushiro, Captain of the 13th Squad officially introduced!

First Timer, Dub

These episodes have had some really fun fights in them. Also Kenpachi really reminds me of the protagonist from Blade of the Immortal, design wise.

The arc is really picking up the pace and with it another ED change.

ED 4: Happy People by Skoop On Somebody. Karaoke Fansub | Clean

This ED is similar to ED 2 (Thank You!!) in the sense it's a feel good, fun time kind of song. The lyrics just about people enjoying themselves and the visuals match it as well. The main cast in casual wear chilling on a weekend and the Gotei 13 members letting loose with the Lieutenants gathered around and Squad 11 (+ Renji) rolling out. It's also another time for Kubo to flex his prowess for fashion and character design (seriously, it's insane if you've ever seen manga promos or paid a modicum of attention to the OPs/EDs).

Although, it does give you a bit of mood whiplash when you compare it to the events that happen right before it. Ishida on his seemingly last legs? HAPPY PEOPLE. Later Episode Spoilers HAPPY PEOPLE. Either way, a personal favourite of mine for the feel good vibes, and I hope it becomes one of yours too.

Kenpachi is also one of my top favorite Bleach characters, and now it's time for my boy to shine! (After we see what the rest of the gang is up to)

And with this episode we are approximately a tenth of the way through the series (counting all of the fillers that is).

Ep 37: Motive of the Fist

Tatsufusa Enjoji is blasting off again

What's the over/under on Shunsui throwing those petals into the air himself versus cajoling Nanao into doing it? Wow, I paused to make this joke, and then the anime does it for me. Great minds think alike, I guess.

Love the length of the scene of Chad rolling from Shunsui's tap.

Ep 38: Desperation! The Broken Zangetsu

"But captain! One of these same Ryouka was probably resposible for the murder of Captain Aizen!" "Hmm, perhaps, but then again, maybe they weren't"

Have you seen these Ryouka, Shunsui? Two of them have orange hair, like delinquents! Who knows what they're capable of!

You guys don't know how long I've been waiting for a good, clean close-up for this screencap, but: Nice.

Ep 41: Reunion, Ichigo and Rukia

So, it sounds like that mask has been following Ichigo around. Spooky.

Ah, it turns out everybody's favorite cat boy was a cat girl the whole time! u/Shimmering-Sky, I'm surprised you hadn't spoiled yourself on this since you like to look up voice actors so often.

I love the visual effect of heavy Reiatsu.

Re-watcher - Enough kids stuff, let’s get on to the real show

Ep 35

• Wow, the English VA for Momo really knocked it out of the park in this scene.

• Even though he hasn't done anything openly villainous yet, Gin makes no attempts to appear as anything but the bad guy.

• Hitsugaya's such a boss. Everyone gives him shit for being a young Captain, but it really just means he's crazy strong.

• It seems inevitable that there's going to be some in-fighting between the squads on the way. Here's looking forward to some hype Captain battles.

• Zaraki just waiting ominously right in Ichigo's eventual path.

• Fuck yeaaa, Kyoroku is so cool. Can't wait to see him in action.

• Yesss YEEESSSS! This fight is gonna be Legendary!

Ep 36

• What's that, you thought Orihime or Rukia would surely be best girl? Don't be silly; they're great and all but Rangiku Matsumoto outshines them like the sun.

• "This guy's so strong my sweat is floating upwards!" When a character's mere existence is enough to break the physics in the area, you know things are about to get serious.

• [Target Acquired. Beginning extermination sequence.]

• Tfw your body makes an independent decision to suddenly die. "Nooope, fuck this, we're out!"

• Well intentioned as Rukia's silent pleading may be, there was no way Ichigo was ever gonna be able to run from this fight. Hell, Zaraki's been hunting him since they arrived, it was inevitable.

• Yajiru is just adorable every time we see her. It's like they took all the moe that would normally be spread among characters and concentrated it in her.

• "Go ahead and cut me!" Make it a good one, Ichigo. You probably won't get another chance. You don't seem to understand just how serious this guy is about wanting a fight.

• These eyes are not good eyes, and Ichigo's chance is already wasted with his first step.

• "At that moment, Ichigo wished for nothing so much as to have never been born. Every decision was a regret, for each one had brought him to this terminus."

Ep 37

• Oh good, it looks like Goku's arrived to help!

• I hope this guy's content spending his last moments alive looking like an idiot. Yeah man, you so fast.

• So now that Chad's current strength has been showcased, it's time for the main event.

• Nanao is perfect. Honestly I forgot this show had such competition for best girl.

• So like I was saying, Kyoroku is great. Just the chill af, deadly serious about it. Strong as hell, but he doesn't revel in it. I'd really like to see him vs Zaraki.

• It always sucks seeing the heroes get their asses kicked, and it sucks even more to understand that they really had no chance.

• I swear, Ichigo and Chad have the purest, manliest bromance I've ever seen.

Ep 38

• I'm suddenly curious about the overall socioeconomic status of Soul Society, what with all these abandoned buildings crowded in the middle of the realm.

• Ichigo's not looking so good. I can't blame him, but c'mon man; what happened to all that confidence and resolve you had before? Renji would kick your ass again right now.

• F for Chad, and as always, for the Soul Society Civil Engineer's Union. That plaza got bombed.

• Oooo, Nanao super scary with her laser hands. Kyoroku continues to be a good dude and saves Chad.

• Lol @ Zaraki just taking a break while Ichigo gets his shit together.

• Ohhhh shit, Tousen's getting into things. Worrying both because he's a Captain and because of his general lack of involvement with the situation. He's an outside party by now, and not likely to be swayed from his goal of shutting this shit down.

• Ichigo you stuck up little shit, how dare you look down on Zaraki. You're only alive right now because he was so generous as to allow you to hear him; don't you go thinking you know jack about that sword.

• You see? That's what you get. Writhe on the ground like the worm you are.

• Poor Zangetsu, we hardly knew ye. I'm sure the next one will be even bigger.

• "Gotta stop the bleeding! Lying here gasping and bleeding should do the trick."

• Somebody looks to be immensely disappointed with Ichigo. Looks like it's time for another Escher-whoopin.

Ep 39

• "Come with me if you want to win." Where's Sky? I vote this for a wallpaper, if you haven't already.

• *Cartman screeching* "But maa sword is Zangetsuu!" Yeah Ichigo, that's you right now.

• TFW you broke your legendary gear and have to use something from the store.

• Alter-Ichigo like "Naw, this is how you use it, noob.

• Tl;dr: Swords are like Pokemon. They fight better when you're friends with them.

• Zangetsu might be a bigger tsundere than even Uryu.

• Ichigo's boost in power only prompts Zaraki to go all in. I knew the guy was a total lunatic, but fuuuuuck that looked like it hurt!

• Oh jesus no what the #*$%#%^ Everybody run, the end of days is at hand.

• Yajiru kowaii!

• Zaraki kowaii!

• Ichigo's little Patronus being his Hollow Mask is a pretty cool touch.

• Things are getting spicy in the soul society! A good old-fashion whodunit
• The escalation between Momo and Kira was pretty wild.

• The Kenpachi fight was pretty great when I was younger, let's see how it is now.

episode 37

• I mean go Chad, but it's pretty clear Kyoraku is going to kick his ass. Kyoraku is a badass, he's one of my favorite captains.

episode 38 & 39

• Oh yeah, this is good stuff. Kenpachi is great. spiritual pressure up to 11.

episode 40

• Plot twist! Rukia killed Ganju's brother! That's a tough sell for Ganju. I wonder how he will reconcile it.

episode 41

• Ah yes, I remember seeing this scene as a young lad.

• I feel so bad for Momo, she’s too wholesome

• Oops its a big mistake to threaten momo in front of hitsugaya

• This bit with Hanataro and his energy pill is killing me

• Ooooooo Captain Kyoraku and his lieutenant Nanao, probably my favorite captain (Nanao is pretty cute too tbh)

• ED has squad 9, probably my favorite captain/lieutenant relationship

• It also shows Hitsugaya’s shikai, very cool

• side note: Really dig how they’re showing Kenpachi’s immense spiritual pressure

• Kenny’s not fucking around, not like he ever does to begin with

• The fated showdown is about to begin…

• Yachiru is amazing and hilarious but also don’t mess with her

• This ED is Squad 1 with head boy Genryuusai and (whatever his lieutenant’s name is)

• I like how they’re showing Ukitake and Kyoraku being trained, nice touch

• The animation for Ichigo and Kenny’s fight is actually pretty good

• This is serving as a nice reality check for Ichigo

• Captain Tousen- the Stevie Wonder of the Bleach world

• “There’s only ever been winning”- Ichigo sounds badass here

• Now obviously there’s some sort of filter, but JYB voicing the other Ichigo shows his flexibility and range

• I was just thinking how cool Ichigo looked standing back up and then whoosh- he’s slashed Kenpachi. What a great directing decision

• Just in case you forgot, Kenny is also a badass

hi I have a question will you make a thread for the filler arcs when they come? I am currently watching the bount arc (for the first time since I watched all bleach back when I was a teenagers but skipping the fillers) now as an adult I have new eyes for the show and I would like to share my opinions on the filler arcs!

when in the flashback Kenny asks Yachiru her name... and she touches his sword. Bloody hell. Also after the battle... when he is asking his zanpakutou to help him grow stronger... but doesnt hear a response then knocks out.. Yachiru says let's get stronger together kenny. Fcuk me... Was KT really planning this so early??
